About the Role

The Ultrasound Technologist performs or assists in ultrasound examinations and procedures, renders technical assistance to the Radiologist, and maintains and cares for all ultrasound equipment.

Responsibilities

• Prepares and examines patients for ultrasound examinations, verifying identity and obtaining health status and medical history.
• Confirms that the ultrasound examination correlates with patient clinical history and presentation.
• Informs the physician in charge of any contraindications or changes needed to the procedure.
• Communicates with the patient, explaining the exam and instructions, and answering non-diagnostic questions.
• Develops and modifies a procedure plan using age and gender appropriate considerations.
• Performs exams under general or direct physician supervision, adjusting scanning technique to optimize image quality.
• Analyzes sonographic findings to ensure comprehensive exams for diagnosis.
• Performs measurements and calculations according to laboratory and ACR protocols.
• Minimizes patient exposure to acoustic energy without compromising exam quality.
• Notifies appropriate health care provider when immediate medical attention is needed.
• Evaluates patient's physical and mental status prior to discharge.
• Records diagnostic images and data for physician use and archival purposes.
• Provides a written summary of preliminary findings to the radiologist.
• Applies technical judgment to obtain studies of acceptable diagnostic quality.
• Assists, prepares, and positions patients as required for Ultrasound procedures.
• Provides patient education relevant to specific imaging procedures.
• Ensures all images are appropriately labeled as specified by the department SOP.
• Assists with QA/QC program ensuring compliance with regulatory agency requirements.
• Assists physician directly during procedures (e.g., Biopsies, MSK injections).
• Ensures images are transmitted to PACS in a timely fashion.
• Ensures Ultrasound room and equipment cleanliness.
• Maintains necessary supplies and accessories in the imaging room.
• Accurately records all required patient tracking information and exam notes into Epic Radiant.
• Ensures that all studies performed are correct and completed in Epic Radiant and PACS immediately after completion of exam.
• Performs related clerical duties in the absence of support personnel.
• Informs supervisor or appropriate personnel of needed repairs to equipment or unsafe conditions.
• Prevents the spread of infection by adhering to infection control policies and protocol.
• Attends in-services and other professional development meetings.
• Maintains appropriate Continuing Medical Education credits.

Requirements

• Associates degree (AA) or equivalent from a college or technical school
• 0-2 years of experience as Ultrasound Technician.
• SPI Certification
• Graduate from an accredited Ultrasound Technician program
• Will complete the ARDMS within one year of hire.
• American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) RVT certification must also be completed within one year of hire.
