About the Role

We are seeking Linux Engineers to maintain the critical infrastructure underlying Jane Street's technology. This broad role involves working with on-prem and cloud infrastructure, across compute, storage, and networking layers, from physical hardware to workload orchestration. You will have the opportunity to work deeply in specific areas, such as building in-house tools, integrating mainstream technologies, acting as a Linux expert, automating processes, and resolving production issues.

Responsibilities

• Building in-house tools and systems that make up our platform.
• Integrating mainstream (often open-source) technologies to feel native to our infrastructure.
• Acting as a firm's Linux expert and teaching other engineers specialist skills like systems debugging.
• Automating our own work to increase speed and reliability.
• Diagnosing and resolving production issues in real time, often under time pressure.
• Carrying out scheduled changes to the platform, including upgrades, migrations, capacity changes, and rollouts.
• Working on problems ranging from datacenter provisioning and orchestration to kernels, drivers, production and research storage at scale, and cloud integration.
• Collaborating with IT and Network Engineering colleagues on Linux desktops and host network participation.

Requirements

• Knowledgeable about operating system fundamentals, computer architecture, and systems programming concepts like sockets, virtual memory, and the process life cycle.
• Able to understand network protocols at a basic level.
• Comfortable at the command line of a Linux machine and fluent in basic introspection and troubleshooting: system health, individual processes, logs.
• Solves problems by writing code (in any language) and cares about robust software engineering.
• Intellectually curious, collaborative, humble, and eager to learn (including from mistakes).
• A strong communicator.
• Fluent in English.
