About the Role
Relay's network relies on forecasts for operational efficiency. The Network squad builds and maintains the forecasting engine, with Demand Forecasting as its core component. This role involves owning the hardest and most ambiguous parts of the forecast, setting methodology and validation standards, and hands-on model building.
Responsibilities
- Own the integrated forecast end to end, blending live tracking signals with model-generated parcels.
- Build the hardest models in the area, including long-horizon, inbound-international volume, and parcel size/weight models.
- Set the methodology and validation standards for Demand Forecasting, defining model evaluation and accuracy measurement.
- Raise the technical bar by reviewing approaches, making model choices, and mentoring team members.
- Define the forecast's interfaces with demand-management, Routing, and network-planning functions.
- Learn operational processes and identify areas where the current approach falls short.
- Own production quality, ensuring models are monitored and drift is caught early.
- Work with Finance to keep the handoff between operational and financial models reliable.
- Quantify the impact of model error on cost per parcel to guide effort investment.
Requirements
- Have been the technical anchor on a modeling team, owning hard problems and setting standards.
- Think in interconnected systems and design interfaces deliberately.
- Possess a deep track record of building and delivering models from ambiguous starting points.
- Demonstrate strong Python and SQL skills, with depth across the full modeling lifecycle.
- Experience with time-series forecasting across classical statistical approaches, gradient boosting, and deep learning.
- At least 8 years in a data science or quantitative modeling role with clear examples of impactful models and methodology setting.
- Communicate effectively with non-technical stakeholders.
- Comfortable using AI tools like LLMs and code assistants.
- Ability to learn a complex operational domain quickly and model it well.
