About the Role
Human Computer Lab is developing character robots that feel alive and responsive, starting with LeLamp, a robot that explores a new category of consumer robotics where everyday objects become interactive. The goal is to advance human-robot interaction by creating technology that is legible, emotionally intuitive, and human-centered, laying the groundwork for a new generation of robots for everyday environments.
Responsibilities
- Create concept art, mood boards, and character studies to define LeLamp's personality and visual identity.
- Collaborate with the hardware team on form factor, silhouette, materials, and color to ensure physical design aligns with character.
- Design expressive motion, including gestures, emotional states, and behaviors through movement, light, and sound.
- Prototype and iterate quickly, transitioning between sketches, renders, and physical mockups.
- Partner with robotics and software engineers to translate character intent into concrete behavior parameters.
- Build and maintain style guides and a character bible for consistent expression as the team grows.
- Review hardware and software prototypes against the character vision and provide clear, actionable feedback.
- Support brand and marketing assets to maintain character consistency across all touchpoints.
Requirements
- Pursuing a degree in screen-writing, animation, character design, industrial design, or a related field, or possess equivalent hands-on portfolio experience.
- Possess a portfolio showcasing character design or expressive design work in 2D or 3D.
- Ability to document clearly and explain design reasoning.
- Comfortable with rapid iteration, moving from rough sketches to testable prototypes without waiting for a perfect brief.
- Genuine interest in physical products, beyond screen-based or purely digital characters.
- Experience designing characters or mascots within physical hardware constraints.
- Understanding of core animation principles (timing, weight, squash and stretch, anticipation) and their translation into motors, servos, and lighting.
- Comfortable collaborating directly with engineers to translate abstract 'feel' into concrete buildable specifications.
- Ability to move quickly through iteration cycles and make progress without perfect information.
- Takes ownership of work from initial sketch to live robot behavior.
- Works well in small, collaborative teams with constant communication between character, electrical, and mechanical disciplines.
- Cares about the character's ability to convey warmth, expressiveness, and a sense of aliveness.

Education Level
