About the Role

The Interpreter I plays a vital role in supporting communication between Limited English Proficient (LEP) patients, their families, and care teams. This role ensures clear, compassionate, and accurate communication throughout the patient’s care journey and contributes to departmental projects, programs, and broader language access initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Interprets and transmits complex medical information from medical providers to patients, including consent forms, diagnoses, during medical procedures, and discharge plans.
  • Assesses patient understanding of information conveyed and requests clarification or repetition if the message is unclear.
  • Recognizes when communications between patients, their family or caregivers, and hospital staff need cultural nuance adjustments, interpreting accordingly and advising hospital staff with diplomacy.
  • Resolves daily issues and questions independently, escalating more complex situations to Language Services leadership.
  • Manages schedule and uses available tools to mitigate downtime due to cancelled assignments, informing the department of any changes promptly.
  • Cultivates collaborative work relationships across the organization to ensure seamless coordination of care and services.

  • 2-4 years of equivalent experience
