About the Role

Guardian Australia is seeking a graphics editor to lead the creation and delivery of reactive visual journalism. This role involves commissioning, producing, and editing graphics for breaking news, data-driven reporting, and explanatory journalism, ensuring they are accurate, engaging, and visually compelling. The position collaborates with global teams to ensure high-quality visual coverage and contributes to shaping workflows and standards.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor the news cycle and anticipate reactive news graphics that add value to international and Australian breaking news stories.
  • Collaborate with Australia editors, the Sydney international desk, and the global graphics team to plan medium-turnaround visual stories.
  • Source graphics and integrate them with written news or analysis, balancing breaking news demands.
  • Act as part of a global, 24/7 graphics team, owning major breaking and developing globally significant stories during Australia hours.
  • Provide clear handovers to colleagues in other locations to support continuous coverage.
  • Source reliable and trustworthy data from reputable sources.
  • Source, clean, and analyze data, obtaining meaningful satellite imagery and other materials for graphics creation.
  • Interpret material from scientific publications and other sources for explainer diagrams, annotated images, and visual storytelling.
  • Translate newsroom requests into well-sourced and visually striking graphics, ensuring accuracy and visual excellence.
  • Produce and edit a range of graphics, from simple charts to complex data visualization and mapping, using various software.
  • Pitch graphics to the newsroom, manage the Australian graphics team, prioritize stories by impact and importance, and handle team communications with local and international stakeholders.
  • Ensure graphics styles and principles are upheld, maintaining rigorous standards of journalistic integrity and usability.
  • Maintain a mobile-first mindset for visual journalism production.
  • Engage in elevating the team’s skill set and evolving workflows.

Requirements

  • Deep knowledge of visual journalism with a portfolio demonstrating the ability to create effective data-driven graphics for digital platforms.
  • Experience with the tools, techniques, and workflows required for visual journalism.
  • Significant experience (7-8+ years) working at pace for a busy news organization, ideally in a breaking news environment.
  • Deep knowledge of the use and misuse of graphics.
  • Ability to provide feedback to senior stakeholders and build relationships within a newsroom.
  • Extensive knowledge of geography and cartographic best practices.
  • Good understanding of media law.
  • Strong understanding of data sourcing, cleaning, and analysis.
  • Knowledge of how to find trustworthy and reputable data sets, photos, and other information for visual assignments.
  • Knowledge of key accessibility checks and challenges of designing inclusive graphics.
  • Good understanding of cartography, including appropriate projection use and choropleth classifications.
  • Discernment and strong judgment regarding the use of OSINT.
  • Demonstrable ability to bring a diverse perspective to the role.
