About the Role
Latent Defense is hiring its first Director of Engineering to help scale the engineering team while remaining deeply technical. This role involves managing and growing the engineering organization, including hiring, onboarding, and performance management. The Director will collaborate with founders and the product team on roadmap and prioritization, while staying hands-on with complex technical challenges across the stack, from agent orchestration to model deployments and infrastructure. Key responsibilities include delivering engineering efforts and product features on time, ensuring successful deployments into customer environments.
Responsibilities
- Build and lead the engineering team as it scales, owning hiring, onboarding, mentoring, coaching, and performance.
- Stay hands-on across the stack: agent orchestration, model packaging and deployment, infrastructure, and customer environment deployment.
- Partner closely with product and founders on roadmap, prioritization, and translating technical tradeoffs into execution plans.
- Set technical direction and review architecture for the autonomous threat modeling system.
- Build and champion observability and telemetry practices.
- Own delivery rigor and quality, including sprint planning, code review standards, engineering process, testing, deployment, and scaling.
- Represent engineering in cross-functional planning and technical customer conversations.
- Maintain a security-first approach for the engineering team.
- Ensure successful, error-free, durable, scalable, secure, and feature-complete product delivery into customer environments.
Requirements
- Very senior engineering background with deep, hands-on technical depth; not a purely managerial background.
- Proven track record in managing and growing engineering teams, including sourcing, interviewing, and closing senior technical talent.
- Experience working with younger engineers and maximizing their potential through coaching and mentorship.
- Experience operating within a startup or seed-stage environment, comfortable with ambiguity.
- Background in enterprise software, ideally with a highly complex technical product.
- Experience running projects that deploy in customer environments and managing associated engineering challenges.
- Strong cross-functional collaborator, able to translate between technical and business priorities.
- Comfortable operating across the stack: TypeScript, Python, PostgreSQL, Docker/Kubernetes, and hybrid deployment patterns.
- Familiarity with agent native concepts, AI tools, Claude Code, workflows, integrations, and best practices for skills and agents.
- Ability to coach, mentor, and guide engineers of all levels.
- Systems thinking and building capabilities.
