About the Role

The CNA administers nursing care to designated residents under the direction of a registered or licensed nurse. Coordinates and supports the activities of our resident units and actively participates in the direct care of the resident, by following the specific approaches as stated in the plan of care.

Responsibilities

  • Receives assignments which will include resident’s names and room numbers to whom they must deliver care on that shift.
  • Uses the Resident Care Record freely to have total awareness of resident’s ability.
  • Provides resident care as assigned which includes baths (bed and whirlpool) oral hygiene, assistance in transfer to and from the bathroom, offers bedpans and urinals, always keeps incontinent resident clean and dry, changes bed linens as often as necessary.
  • Transfers, ambulates, and positions residents to ensure comfort, prevent pressure sores & maintain & promote optimal level of function.
  • See that the residents are properly & comfortably always clothed.
  • Provides personal grooming as part of the resident care, e.g., trims nails, keeps resident’s hair combed and shampooed as necessary and shaves male resident’s daily.
  • Gives restorative care which includes exercise; instructs and encourages residents in self-help measures and activities.
  • Makes beds, tidies rooms, keeps inside of nightstands, dressers, and closets in an orderly fashion.
  • Prepares residents for meals, serves, and collects trays, feeds, or assists in feeding residents, provides nourishments when indicated, encourages & monitors meal acceptance and distributes fresh water.
  • Helps prepare residents for tests, X-rays and visits by physician, dentist and podiatrist, occupational therapy, physical therapy and recreational activities.
  • Prepares them for church services and activities in other areas of the facility and may transport them to these areas or departments where the above occurs.
  • May assist residents during church services and other activities.
  • Performs personal services for the resident within reason, such as: writing letters, operating TV and radio, assisting with recreational activity and occupational therapy projects; promoting concepts of comfort, security, rehabilitation, dependence, and resident safety.
  • Administers bedtime care with particular attention to toileting, oral hygiene, and bathing, settles resident comfortably to bed.
  • Assists relatives, visitors, and guests, but directs any inquiries regarding resident’s health to the nurse in charge.
  • Assists with and/or performs procedures following proper instructions and supervision, e.g., taking and recording TPR’s measuring and recording intake and output; assisting in admitting, transferring, discharging resident; collecting specimens such as urine, stool and sputum; as directed by charge nurse, assisting with care of terminally ill resident; postmortem care.
  • Provides foley catheter care according to policy.
  • Maintains the proper room temperature compatible with the resident’s needs and provides for adjusting the windows for ventilation-but always aware pf preventing resident’s exposure to draft and safety.
  • Assists nurses in giving treatments and examining residents.
  • Maintains appropriate techniques in all resident care to prevent spread of disease and infection.
  • Observes resident & informs nurse of any change in attitude, reaction, appetite or any other physical significant change as they occur.
  • Assists with restorative and rehabilitative care of the resident and instructions in self-help according to the plan designed by the health team as stated on the Resident Care Record.
  • Participates in floor conferences by contributing observations and knowledge gained about the residents while caring for them.
  • Answers lights and call bells to determine resident’s needs.
  • May answer telephone calls and relay messages to the proper source.
  • Runs errands as directed by the nurse in charge.
  • Participates in routine floor duties including cleaning where not routinely performed by the Housekeeping Department; may clean, store, and prepare supplies used on the unit.
  • In case of a disaster or fire, ascertain that the Home’s plan of action is followed as the resident’s and other’s safety and health is maintained.
  • Knows the principles and policies of levels of isolation and the procedure for setting up and removing isolation equipment.
  • Understands and functions under the policy and procedures as to the application of restraints.
  • Assists the Inservice Coordinator with orientation of nursing assistants.
  • Maintains accurate records on resident activities and functions such as Day Book, BM Sheets, Toileting Sheets, T&P Record, and bath record.
  • Maintains a clean, safe, orderly work area such as the utility room, resident bedside, tub room, nurses’ station, sitting & dining room, etc.
  • Attends in-service education programs.
  • Incorporate the philosophy, objectives, policies, and standards of the Home in correlation with resident care.
  • Always adheres to dress code policy.
  • Always adheres to time and attendance policy.
  • Practices safe work habits and follows all safety procedures of the facility.
  • Assures the safety, security, and wellbeing of our residents.

Requirements

  • Proper experience in nursing home or hospital setting desirable.
  • Certified Nursing Assistant Certificate.
  • Sense of responsibility, moral integrity, and loyalty.
  • Sincere desire to work with the aged.
  • Patience and compassion are essential.
  • Pleasant, cheerful, tactful, courteous with residents, visitors, and co-workers.
  • Level-headed and calm in emergencies.
  • Ability to cooperate with other personnel.
  • Ability to treat resident information ethically and as confidential material.
  • Neat, well-groomed appearance.
  • Enthusiasm for work and ability to receive and carry out orders.
  • Must submit to and pass a yearly examination, PPD skin test and attend all mandatory in-services.
  • Must have physical ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
  • Required to make decisions within the established guidelines.
  • Required to handle emergency situations.
  • Must share weekend and holiday work.
  • Assignment changes may occur during a shift to ensure adequate staffing levels and resident care needs are met.
