The American-Statesman's Texas Longhorns Insider innovates on the beat by filing news-breaking FOIA requests, writing narrative-setting coverage, identifying key players, sourcing within the department and conference, and picking up trending topics.
Responsibilities
- Cover Texas athletics with a focus on football, basketball, and baseball, assisting in other areas as needed.
- Lead enterprise topics and public-records reporting related to the Texas Longhorns, with monthly novel reporting expected.
- Monitor Arch Manning's junior season and Heisman chase, sourcing his family and tracking his movements, appearances, and national media coverage.
- Integrate on-court success with off-court developments like NIL, eligibility rules, and coaches' compensation.
- Build sources within Texas athletics to break news and within the SEC for context, including FOIA requests to other universities.
- Write high-interest trending briefs as they arise, taking point on in-the-moment, social-media friendly content.
- Appear on camera for videos and off-platform content, help record video for social media, and build alternative story formats.
- Track metrics to ensure efforts are focused on areas that engage the audience.
Requirements
- Experience and comfortability pursuing public records and building sources within athletic departments.
- Time management, multitasking, prioritization skills under tight deadlines, and strong communication skills.
- 3 or more years of professional experience covering athletics.
- Experience working with different CMSes, video, and SEO.
- Experience working with data sets and data visualization.
- Strong ability to use social media and KPIs to guide decision-making on story ideas and beat coverage.
- Familiarity with a range of sports and ability to pinch-hit on certain beats with little notice.
