About the Role
The Building Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for general maintenance and repairs of all equipment and services for buildings at The Culinary Institute of America (CIA). This includes performing general preventative maintenance, clearing drains, servicing mechanical equipment, and responding to emergencies.
Responsibilities
- Performs a wide variety of work on all structures and systems on campus and off campus.
- Interacts positively with students, chefs, faculty, staff, vendors, and guests.
- Conducts repairs, preventive maintenance, and replacements on all systems as required.
- Performs routine facility inspections, identifying and addressing deficiencies.
- Monitors, inspects, and troubleshoots all equipment and systems.
- Performs minor aesthetic repairs such as mopping, painting, spackling, and replacing carpet tile or ceiling grid.
- Coordinates work to minimize disruption to campus activities.
- Completes and follows up on work orders using electronic devices.
- Repairs door hardware, locks, and fire protection systems.
- Troubleshoots, performs preventative maintenance, and repairs mechanical systems and equipment.
- Assists and reviews work of outside contractors.
- Responds to work orders in residence halls, repairing various systems.
- Maintains communication with campus stakeholders regarding work order status and emergencies.
- Assists with special event set-ups and breakdowns, including after-hours work.
- Required to report for duty during emergencies if deemed essential.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum of three (3) years of general facilities maintenance, repair, or refinishing experience; OR one (1) year of experience in a skilled trade (electrical, HVAC-R, boiler service, plumbing); OR formal equivalent trade school experience.
- Valid Driver’s License.
Skills
- Ability to read blueprints, work orders, and instructions.
- Proficient in English communication.
- Ability to follow directions and procedures.
- Proficient in electronic environments, including reading email, sending pictures electronically, and using handheld devices for work orders.
- Skillful with tools for plumbing, painting, tile work, carpentry, mechanical, and electrical trades.
- Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to be adaptable, dependable, and handle multiple priorities.
- Ability to follow OSHA and CIA safety protocols and other applicable rules and procedures.
