About the Role

Faculty members at the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) are responsible for teaching students, developing curriculum, conducting research, and serving on committees. This role involves preparing lesson plans, teaching and evaluating students, revising course materials, and developing intellectual property. Faculty also provide career advice, maintain office hours, assist students, and uphold CIA policies, contributing to the Institute's mission and operations.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare daily lesson plans and teach classes consistent with Institute philosophy and policies.
  • Serve as an advisor to students needing extra help, course information, career guidance, or study assistance.
  • Provide regular, constructive, objective, and timely feedback to students.
  • Evaluate and document student performance using established methods and criteria.
  • File course grades promptly within the allowed time limit.
  • Compile and present instructional material according to CIA Catalog descriptions, syllabi, and schedules.
  • Utilize established syllabus and textbook(s) for the course being taught.
  • Maintain records of student attendance, progress, and grade distributions.
  • Manage the classroom environment effectively.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to prepare, review, and revise course guides, syllabi, curriculum materials, and other educational materials.
  • Contribute to the Institute's growth by serving on committees or task forces, assisting visitors, recommending students and potential employees, and displaying hospitality.
  • Communicate through appropriate channels.
  • Enforce sanitation principles, attendance policies, Professionalism, Uniform, and Hygiene Policy, and other academic policies.
  • Stay abreast of new developments in liberal arts and food studies, maintain awareness of industry issues, and complete professional development activities annually.
  • Support the mission, policies, and strategic direction of the Institute and the School of Food Studies and Liberal Arts.
  • Assume responsibility for classroom equipment and facilities.
  • Perform any other assigned duties.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. or equivalent terminal degree in Spanish Literature and/or Culture, or a related field of study.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of college- or university-level teaching experience.
  • Native or near-native fluency in Spanish and English.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with multiple teams.
  • Ability to use sound judgment and discretion in handling sensitive student issues confidentially.
  • Excellent written, verbal communication, and professional presentation skills.
  • Strong computer experience, including proficiency with MS Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Strong organizational skills, detail-oriented, and thorough.
  • Ability to work independently or in a team environment and maintain collaborative relationships.
  • Excellent and welcoming presence in front of students, guests, and employees.
  • Must be available to work nights and weekends as required.
  • Regular work requires significant sitting and standing for extended periods.
  • Regular work requires the use of a computer, sometimes in excess of eight (8) hours per day.

  • The Culinary Institute of America (CIA) faculty members are responsible for teaching students, developing curriculum, conducting research, and serving on committees in service to the Institute.
  • The CIA does not have a traditional faculty tenure system; however, following a successful 3-year probationary period, appointments are considered ongoing, and faculty are eligible to apply for promotions in academic rank, subject to standard employment terms and conditions and the collective bargaining agreement (if any).
