About the Role
The Veterinary Assistant provides excellent medical care to Vetco Total Care hospital patients and phenomenal customer care to their owners, representing the mission and values of the organization. This role fosters cohesion and motivation within the practice, ensuring patient needs always come first and creating an exceptional customer experience.
Responsibilities
- Greet clients and patients, escort them into exam rooms, obtain weight and vital signs, and record information in the electronic medical record.
- Collect thorough patient histories and document patient visits in EMRs.
- Assist doctors with appointments, surgery, dentistry, and euthanasia under supervision.
- Perform patient restraint and obtain/process laboratory samples.
- Handle and dispense medications as directed by the veterinarian.
- Maintain and update client/patient records.
- Prepare patients for surgical and dental procedures.
- Assist in anesthetizing patients and monitor them safely under anesthesia.
- Monitor patients during recovery and prepare them for discharge or transfer.
- Perform in-hospital treatments for sick patients, including administering medications and IV fluids.
- Keep patients clean, watered, and fed as indicated and directed by the doctor.
- Safely walk canine patients for elimination when necessary.
- Assist in training new staff members and disseminate knowledge as required.
- Maintain a neat and clean hospital environment.
- Provide backup phone and front desk support as needed.

- Must have telephone and computer skills.
