About the Role

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner investigates deaths within New York City that are criminal, accidental, suicidal, sudden, unattended, in a correctional facility, or suspicious/unusual. This temporary position concludes two years from the start date.

Responsibilities

  • Assist Mortuary Operations Supervisors with daily unit operations.
  • Perform all Mortuary Procedures and decedent handling (METT, Check In, Storage, Release of Remains, Intake and Release photos, and Fingerprinting).
  • Prepare incident reports, schedules, and statistics.
  • Operate OCME Case Management System (CMS), CMS Mobile App, and other systems for all documents (Death Certificates, Burial Permits) related to intake and release of remains.
  • Ensure Mortuary areas are properly cleaned, stocked, and sanitized daily.
  • Report all complaints, accidents, and incidents to the proper personnel.
  • Perform all City Morgue Technician duties as needed.
  • Weigh remains, lift remains into storage compartments.
  • Box and load City Burial as needed.
  • Operate a motor vehicle to perform case recovery at death scenes.
  • Adhere to all unit policies and procedures.
  • Take fingerprints of remains before, during, and/or after autopsy.
  • Perform borough case reconciliations.
  • Attend unit and agency meetings as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent.
  • One year of full-time satisfactory experience in mortuary and/or autopsy work.
  • Authorization to work in the United States is required.
  • Selected candidates will be required to provide a DNA sample by swabbing.
  • This position has been identified as essential and may require 24-hour availability during emergency events.
