About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Senior Engineering Manager to lead the development of an enterprise-grade API platform, integrating with gateways like APIGEE, APIM, and Kong. This platform will enable rapid delivery of customer experiences at the scale of a Fortune 6 company, serving thousands of engineers and millions of customers.

Responsibilities

  • Set OKRs with the team and ensure the health of KPIs
  • Partner with leaders across engineering, business, and product to build a strategy and roadmap
  • Collaborate with other teams across CVS Digital to ensure the API platform meets engineer's needs
  • Keep an eye out for new and emerging technologies that improve performance, delivery, and the developer experience
  • Hire and retain high performing, deeply technical engineers that care about building a great engineering culture
  • Lead a team of front-end and backend engineers in building the API platform for CVS Health engineers
  • Actively participate in the design and architecture process for new capabilities across teams
  • Provide technical leadership, direction, clarity, and vision
  • Coach and mentor team members and contribute to building a strong engineering culture
  • Care about the mental health and well-being of the engineers on your team, creating a supportive and safe environment
  • Care about the career growth of the engineers on your team, providing feedback and helping them set attainable goals

Requirements

  • Proven experience designing and operating backend APIs at scale, especially GraphQL-based platforms
  • Strong understanding of authentication and authorization patterns, including OAuth, OIDC, JWTs, and service-to-service security
  • Understand business outcomes and drive technical solutions to help achieve goals
  • Servant leader capable of rallying the team around a shared vision
  • Advocate of engineering best practices, including test coverage, clean code, security, and a11y
  • Data-driven and able to articulate the value the platform provides to engineering teams and CVS
  • 7+ years of leadership experience, directly managing individual contributors
  • 7+ years of experience building enterprise grade applications at scale
  • 5+ years of experience with JavaScript
  • 3+ years of experience with TypeScript and modern Node.js backend development
  • Experience with API gateway technologies such as Kong, Apigee, or Azure API Management
  • Experience with distributed workflows, asynchronous orchestration, or job-processing systems such as Temporal or similar platforms
