About the Role
We are seeking a Desktop Support Technician to provide hands-on technical support in a fast-paced academic and research-focused environment. This individual will support by troubleshooting hardware, software, operating system, and connectivity issues across a diverse technology landscape. The ideal candidate will have strong experience supporting macOS, Linux, and Windows environments, excellent customer service skills, and the ability to diagnose and resolve technical issues both remotely and in person.
Responsibilities
- Provide onsite and remote technical support for desktop, laptop, mobile, and peripheral devices.
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, and resolve hardware, software, operating system, and network-related issues.
- Deliver exceptional customer service while supporting users with varying levels of technical expertise.
- Document incidents, service requests, and resolutions within the ticketing system.
- Research root causes and implement effective solutions to minimize recurring issues.
- Create and maintain technical documentation, knowledge base articles, and user guides.
- Communicate technology updates, outages, and system changes to end users as needed.
- Deliver one-on-one and group training sessions for users.
- Support Windows, macOS, and Linux operating systems.
- Assist with operating system upgrades, patch deployments, and workstation lifecycle management.
- Configure and maintain user accounts, device settings, and workstation images.
- Install, configure, and support printers, scanners, mobile devices, and other peripherals.
- Test, document, and deploy workstation configurations across multiple operating system platforms.
- Collaborate with infrastructure and security teams to ensure systems remain secure and well-supported.
- Support hardware procurement, deployment, inventory tracking, and asset lifecycle management.
- Assist with software licensing administration and compliance.
- Coordinate workstation refresh and replacement programs.
- Ensure proper storage, inventory control, and disposal of technology equipment.
- Support distance learning technologies.
- Configure and troubleshoot audio visual equipment, presentation systems, and collaboration tools.
- Provide first-level support for AV and hybrid meeting environments.
- Participate in technical projects and team initiatives.
- Provide technical guidance to junior team members when needed.
- Support security, compliance, and operational best practices.
- Respond to occasional critical support issues outside of normal business hours when required.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 2+ years of desktop support experience in enterprise, higher education, healthcare, or similar environments.
- Hands-on experience supporting macOS.
- Hands-on experience supporting Linux.
- Hands-on experience supporting Windows 10/11.
- Strong troubleshooting skills across hardware, operating systems, applications, and peripherals.
- Experience working within a Help Desk, Service Desk, or ITSM environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Customer-focused mindset with a commitment to delivering high-quality support.
- Ability to quickly learn new technologies and communicate technical concepts to non-technical users.
- Desktop engineering experience, including OS deployments and patch management.
- Experience with Active Directory and user account administration.
- Experience with device management platforms and endpoint support tools.
- Knowledge of networking fundamentals and IP address management.
- Experience supporting audio visual technologies and conference room systems.
- Experience creating user training materials and technical documentation.
