About the Role

Represents the Law Society in various regulatory proceedings, appearing before the Law Society Tribunal and in the courts while ensuring strict confidentiality.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares for hearings, including developing case strategy, assessing evidence, preparing witnesses, drafting documents, negotiating issues, attending prehearings, and researching law.
  • Represents the Law Society in hearings, appeals, and judicial reviews.
  • Manages caseload to ensure compliance with priorities, performance metrics, timelines, and strategic priorities.
  • Communicates with staff and complainants regarding case processes and dispositions.
  • Provides advice to investigators on case-specific matters.
  • Initiates, researches, and recommends policy changes to improve the regulatory process.
  • Participates on Bencher committees and working groups.
  • Promotes knowledge sharing and transfer of applicable standards and information among division members.
  • Contributes to and participates in the development of standardized practices, guidelines, and procedures for prosecuting discipline files.
  • Works with and shares expertise with other regulatory bodies and legal organizations.

Requirements

  • Requires an LLB or JD.
  • Requires a Class L1 license with the Law Society of Ontario.
  • Requires a minimum of articling or post-call litigation experience.
  • Experience gained in a professional regulation context would be advantageous.

  • Ability to manage a high volume caseload in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Professional knowledge of the Law Society’s mandate, services, legislation, and policies.
  • Professional knowledge of investigation and prosecutorial practices.
  • Professional knowledge of rules of evidence and procedure and the law concerning privilege and documentary disclosure.
  • Professional knowledge of legal research and litigation.
