About the Role
Assist the pathology department in processing specimens by accessioning into the pathology computer system, maintaining inventory, and monitoring limited technical aspects. This individual will interact with other laboratory departments and medical staff to meet patient needs.
Responsibilities
- Process and accession all samples submitted to pathology for testing.
- Print labels and cassettes to assist with the grossing process.
- Label frozen sections and other slides as needed.
- Verify proper specimen labeling according to protocol.
- Verify specimens are collected in appropriate containers/fixatives.
- Recognize and report inappropriate collection practices to the supervisor.
- Maintain inventory for pathology technical processes.
- Perform stain changes and other minor technical checks as per protocol at VBMC and satellite locations.
- Dispose of specimens according to proper SOPs.
- Transport reagents, supplies, and specimens to and/or from satellite locations.
- Order reference testing through Care Evolve or similar computer systems.
- Complete all mandated competencies for the position.
- Participate in the orientation and training of new personnel.
- Comply with hospital and departmental policies and procedures.
- Contribute to work-related activities during downtime.
- Offer plans and suggestions for department improvement.
- Arrive at work on time and remain available until the end of the shift.
- Follow established laboratory safety and universal precautions at all times.

- Demonstrate regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
- Perform other duties as required.
Requirements
- High School Diploma required.
- Associates’ degree with biology background preferred.
- Excellent Customer Service Skills.
- Strong Computer & Writing Skills.
- Ability to Multitask.
- Manual dexterity and motor coordination.
- Ability to exert up to 50 lbs. force.
- Ability to work in an environment with potential exposure to dirt, odors, noise, and human waste.
