About the Role

The Staff Software Product Manager at WGU is an individual contributor role for an experienced and highly technical product architecture professional. Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, product peers, and enterprise architecture and engineering to develop strategic product roadmaps.
  • Build business cases, articulate strategy, and evangelize the product vision to stakeholders and cross-functional team members.
  • Measure and report on the efficacy of initiatives and develop action plans accordingly.
  • Make hard, high-stakes trade-offs between features, choosing those most likely to ensure business goals and user needs are met.
  • Work closely with cross-functional teams of stakeholders, end-users, engineers, enterprise architects, and product leaders to understand problems, drive product vision, and define requirements.
  • Create shared outcomes with multiple teams to deliver impact for customers.
  • Create, manage, and regularly present a strategic roadmap to stakeholders and delivery teams.
  • Define product release strategies, ensuring readiness of business partners.
  • Act as a recognized expert for their product, demonstrating mastery of the current platform and understanding gaps to inform roadmaps and strategy.
  • Manage expectations by understanding when initiatives are at risk and proactively communicating with stakeholders.
  • Lead and present in quarterly planning activities.
  • Ensure product quality by testing software features and coordinating user acceptance testing.
  • Mentor and guide newer Product Managers.
  • Lead research efforts to provide clarity from ambiguity and develop data collection strategies.
  • Define and monitor success metrics for products and projects, pivoting when data suggests a need.
  • Write business cases and conduct ROI and other value analyses.
  • Manage significant/complex technical projects, involving delegation and review of work products.
  • Develop technology modernization roadmaps for iterative improvements aligned with operational and business requirements.
  • Lead key technical projects and programs, potentially facilitating leadership and development of technical teams.
  • Influence parties within and outside the job function regarding policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Demonstrate a history of delivering outcomes through partnership with design, engineering, architecture, and the business.
  • Act as an excellent storyteller to represent user interests and influence teams.
  • Be collaborative by nature, empathetic to users, and able to garner trust from stakeholders.
  • Possess a deep understanding and technical background in Service Oriented Architecture.
  • Understand the scope of cloud computing and how to work with software architecture to identify best practices for high-scale platforms.
  • Ability to create design artifacts that provide visual and narrative detail of architectural requirements, decisions, and designs.
  • Ability to easily communicate technical issues and business requirements and value-based outcomes.
  • Understand and learn the nature of legacy enterprise platform architecture.
  • Excellent presentation, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Leadership instincts with a positive team-building approach.
  • Strong problem-solving skills to address technical challenges and make critical decisions.
  • Ability to think strategically about product architecture, align it with business goals, and make decisions with long-term impact.
  • Deep understanding of software architecture principles, design patterns, and best practices.
  • Knowledge of various programming languages, databases, cloud technologies, and software methodologies.
  • Ability to communicate with parties within and outside of the university.
  • Strong passion for exploring and understanding large-scale cloud platform requirements.
  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • 8 years of experience as a Software Product Manager or Product Owner.
  • Professional Product Certification (e.g., Certified Scrum Product Owner (CSPO), Pragmatic Marketing).
  • Experience working in agile environments.
  • Equivalent relevant experience performing the essential functions of this job may substitute for education degree requirements.
  • Occasional travel of up to 20%, including required attendance at designated company summits.
