About the Role
Smiths Detection is seeking an experienced Field Service Engineer (L2) to join their Sydney Airport team. This role involves troubleshooting complex equipment, solving technical problems, and working directly with customers in a fast-paced operational environment, maintaining and installing advanced X-ray and trace detection systems.
Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot, service, maintain and repair X-ray and trace detection equipment
- Complete preventative maintenance activities in line with service agreements and schedules
- Respond to breakdowns and corrective maintenance requests within KPI commitments
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical and electronic faults using multimeters, software tools and diagnostic equipment
- Replace motors, belts, rollers, X-ray generators and other machine components
- Perform inspections, cleaning, repairs and component replacement within equipment
- Support installation and commissioning of new systems
- Complete service documentation, reports and maintenance records accurately
- Manage spare parts consumption and inventory transactions
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and recommend equipment enhancements
- Support and mentor junior engineers and new team members
- Maintain safe work practices and contribute to a strong safety culture
- Work collaboratively with customers, contractors and internal stakeholders
Requirements
- 3+ years' experience in a field service, maintenance, manufacturing, automation or technical support environment
- Experience troubleshooting mechanical, electrical or electronic equipment
- Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills
- Comfortable using hand tools, power tools and testing equipment
- Excellent customer service and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Provisional or unrestricted driver's licence
- Ability to obtain Airport Security Identification Card (ASIC) and other relevant clearances
- Experience supporting airport screening equipment
- Experience supporting automation systems
- Experience supporting industrial machinery
- Experience supporting conveyors
- Experience supporting X-ray systems
- Experience supporting security technologies
- Experience working in a 24/7 operational environment
- Knowledge of preventative maintenance programs and service KPIs
