About the Role

To provide comprehensive care for perioperative patients, including assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation. The Perianesthesia RN will demonstrate a patient-centered approach, assist in the overall functioning of the PACU/ASU, and perform duties within their competence to ensure efficient and effective patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses the patient's physical and psychosocial condition on an ongoing basis.
  • Develops, communicates, and documents a plan of care, involving the patient, family, and healthcare team.
  • Implements and coordinates the plan of care in collaboration with the healthcare team.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of the plan of care and patient's response to care.
  • Plans for education based on individual learning needs and readiness.
  • Provides preceptorship to new staff.
  • Organizes the schedule as the Charge Nurse.
  • Meets performance expectations for customer service, teamwork, resource utilization, and staff and self-development.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to ensure effective operation of the unit.
  • Evaluates and prepares patients for surgery.
  • Performs pre and post-operative assessment of patients.
  • Cares for immediate and post-discharge needs of patients following surgical procedures.
  • Demonstrates skill and knowledge in providing care to patients pre and post-op, including pain management, discharge planning, dysrhythmias, and inadequate airway.
  • Performs pre-op and post-op telephone assessments per protocol.
  • Provides necessary documentation.
  • Demonstrates compliance with nursing standards and facility policies and procedures.
  • Will be crossed trained into other RN roles in the PACU and ASU.
  • Demonstrates competency in moderate sedation.
  • Develops skills in marketing and promotion and represents the hospital in the perioperative surgical setting.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Proficient in computer software, including electronic patient records.
  • Ability to use the internet for literature searches.
  • Two years of experience in a critical care setting preferred.
  • Ambulatory surgery and PACU facility experience preferred.
  • Valid State of Connecticut Registered Nurse License.

Skills

  • BSN preferred
  • Certification in specialty preferred (CAPA, CPAN)
  • ACLS required
  • BLS required
  • PALS required
