About the Role

The Registered Nurse (RN) assesses, plans, implements, evaluates, and supervises individual patient care on a nursing unit according to established policies and procedures. This role provides supervision of non-RN personnel and may delegate and supervise unit activities when acting as Charge Nurse. The RN may be required to work on other nursing units and performs other duties as assigned to maintain a high level of service.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses the patient's physical and psychosocial condition on an ongoing basis.
  • Develops, communicates, and documents a plan of care reflecting individualized patient problems and interventions.
  • Implements and coordinates the plan of care in collaboration with the healthcare team.
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of the plan of care and patient's response to care.
  • Plans for education after assessing individual learning needs and readiness of the patient and family.
  • Functions as a preceptor to new staff.
  • Functions as a Charge Nurse.
  • Demonstrates the ability to provide a safe environment for self and patients.
  • Meets performance expectations for customer service, teamwork, resource utilization, and staff and self-development.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure smooth operation of the department/unit.
  • Demonstrates competency in the care of antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and selected gyn patients.
  • Demonstrates competency in the care of the normal newborn.
  • Incorporates principles of developmentally supportive and family-centered care.
  • Demonstrates competency in the insertion and maintenance of peripheral intravenous lines.
  • Promotes breastfeeding through assistance, instruction, and collaboration with the lactation consultant.
  • Demonstrates competency in functioning as a circulating nurse in the OR.
  • May demonstrate competency to perform scrub duties.
  • Demonstrates competency with documentation in the Perinatal Data Program.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
  • Proficient in use of computer software to include electronic patient records.
  • Must have ability to use internet for literature searches regarding care for patients.
  • 1-2 years' experience required.
  • Valid State of Connecticut Registered Nurse License.
  • Must obtain certification in Electronic Fetal Monitoring within two (2) years.
  • BLS Certification required.
