About the Role
As a Principal Digital Product Designer on the User Experience team, you will play a critical role in shaping high-impact digital experiences across REI’s desktop, mobile, web, and native platforms. You will define product direction, contribute deep craft, and partner closely with product, engineering, research, and brand to deliver thoughtful, human, and inclusive work aligned with REI’s mission to connect people with the outdoors and protect it.
Responsibilities
- Discovers and frames ambiguous problems and drives solutions for one or more critical products or strategic projects on digital platforms.
- Crafts artifacts that communicate solutions, including prototypes, mockups, task analysis, usability studies, personas, user flows, wireframes, style guides, navigational structures, and affinity diagrams.
- Identifies and leads the building of design standards, patterns, style guides, and frameworks for design systems.
- Leads new design standards and practices in collaboration with product, marketing, and engineering teams.
- Facilitates collaboration with product managers, engineers, analytics, and research to ensure customer desires are fulfilled.
- Contributes to task and dependency analysis, scheduling, and risk mitigation plans.
- Champions user research and leads generative and evaluative User Experience research.
- Provides mentorship and coaching to grow the team.
- Evangelizes design best practices while uncovering novel and unexpected solutions.
Requirements
- 10+ years of experience in User Experience, interaction design, information architecture, Service design, or similar.
- 3+ years leading projects and mentoring teams.
- Native mobile design expertise (iOS & Android) with a proven focus on adaptive experiences, responsive layouts, and comprehensive mobile design systems.
- Experience in leadership, collaboration, communicating, and influencing design strategy.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and familiarity with technical constraints and limitations when designing for platforms.
- Proficient at building and shipping features/products at a department level, leading the end-to-end experience across a variety of platforms.
- Demonstrable track record in leading strategic thinking across a large product space, developing product goals, identifying opportunities and outcomes, and developing relationships with cross-functional peers.
- Experience developing design standards, patterns, style guides, best practices, and frameworks that are accessible and utilize human-centered methodologies.
- Experience presenting work to executives, clearly and succinctly articulating goals and concepts.
- A portfolio demonstrating excellent User Experience design skills for solving complex problems with clear results.
- Bachelor’s degree in Design, HCI, Interaction, or a similar area, or equivalent practical experience.
- Actively participates and collaborates with others on one's own team and across REI for the achievement of business goals.
- Flexible in one's viewpoints and positions to support the direction taken by others at REI.
- Uses business knowledge, innovative thinking, and sound judgment in the solution of problems or the pursuit of business opportunities.
