About the Role
The Risk & Compliance Counsel will manage potential risks associated with onboarding new clients, matters, and personnel. This role involves analyzing and resolving ethical, contractual, and business conflicts of interest, researching legal issues related to ethical duties, and advising on compliance and risk management for firm operations. The position requires excellent analytical and communication skills to manage a dynamic workload.
Responsibilities
- Analyze and address potential conflicts for new business intake and lateral hires, ensuring mitigation according to professional conduct rules and firm policy.
- Consult with the OGC, Risk Management Committee, NB&C leadership, and other stakeholders to resolve complex issues.
- Ensure client engagement terms comply with ethical requirements and firm policy.
- Counsel firm attorneys on potential conflicts of interest and other ethical issues.
- Draft waivers and establish/maintain ethical walls.
- Develop and provide training on professional conduct rules and firm risk management/compliance policies.
- Maintain awareness of major potential business conflict issues within the firm.
- Stay informed on trends and legal developments impacting conflicts and new business functions.
- Maintain confidentiality of all firm matters and client information.
- Participate in NB&C and OGC project teams for special firm initiatives.
- Assume additional responsibilities as requested.
- Model and act in accordance with Orrick's client service standards and core values.
Requirements
- Undergraduate degree required.
- Admission to practice in England & Wales required.
- 3+ years of related law firm or corporate OGC experience preferred.
- Extensive knowledge of conflict of interest and new client intake policies and procedures preferred.
- Strong legal research and analytical skills.
- Sound decision-making abilities and good judgment.
- Team-oriented with excellent interpersonal, communication, and counseling skills.
- Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with all levels of firm attorneys and staff.
- Ability to manage change in a dynamic organization while upholding firm core values.
- Excellent project management, organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
