About the Role

Shell Energy Europe & Environmental Products is seeking a Data Scientist to join the Market Analysis team. This role focuses on developing and improving forecasting models critical for informed decision-making on the trading desk, utilizing methods like machine learning and optimization.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, process, clean, and visualize power, gas, and weather data for analysis.
  • Develop and analyze various approaches for forecasting demand, wind, solar, and prices.
  • Perform statistical evaluation and validation of forecasts.
  • Build a framework for deploying models into production for daily trading decisions.
  • Share the deployment framework with the team to enhance development performance.
  • Participate in the design and development of a scalable computational environment with high computational power.
  • Develop in-house optimization models (stack models, dispatch models).
  • Propose new model ideas to improve the desk's P&L.
  • Lead projects involving models and infrastructures with IT and modeling teams.

Requirements

  • Graduate qualification in an analytical or science-based discipline (e.g., engineering, maths, computer science).
  • Ideally a PhD in machine learning, optimization, or equivalent.
  • End-to-end experience with data, including querying, aggregation, analysis, and visualization.
  • Strong Python programming skills for data analysis using libraries like Pandas, NumPy, SciPy, and Scikit-learn.
  • Strong SQL skills for data retrieval, basic analysis, and data cleansing.
  • Strong knowledge and application of object-oriented design and software best practices in Python.
  • Familiarity with cloud architecture, focusing on deploying and hosting applications in a cloud environment (Azure/AWS).
  • Self-starter with commercial awareness and value focus, capable of working with minimal supervision.
  • Good communication skills for presenting developments and facilitating acceptance.
  • Proficiency in algorithmic complexity theory.
  • Proficiency in parallelism & concurrency.
  • Experience with messaging and/or data streaming technologies (e.g., Kafka, ActiveMQ, Azure Service Bus, Azure Event Hubs).
  • Experience in containerizing models and deploying in Kubernetes.
  • Experience implementing algorithms and data structures.
  • Good knowledge of linear algebra, calculus, and discrete mathematics.
