About the Role

Cooks and serves nutritional meals and snacks in accordance with established guidelines and schedules, ensuring safe and presentable preparation and service. Maintains kitchen cleanliness, manages inventory, and assigns/monitors work of kitchen staff.

Responsibilities

  • Plans menus, cleans, cooks, and prepares a variety of foods and beverages.
  • Ensures sufficient food is prepared timely based on the number of people served.
  • Serves food and beverages presentably, including meals for those requiring special assistance.
  • Maintains kitchen stock inventory and assists with ordering and food purchases.
  • Prepares snacks and plates of food for after-hours consumption.
  • Sets tables or sets up buffet lines.
  • Assists in serving meals, ensuring appropriate portions.
  • Transports and picks up food and supplies for catering.
  • Cleans tables, chairs, floors, dishes, utensils, and kitchen appliances.
  • Maintains a high degree of cleanliness in the kitchen and dining room.
  • Ensures meals are prepared safely and kitchen personnel practice proper hygiene.
  • Receives and stocks foods, beverages, and supplies.
  • Stores, refrigerates, and freezes foods safely and economically, monitoring expiration dates.
  • Washes, dries, and stores kitchenware.
  • Sweeps and mops kitchen floors and vacuums dining room floors.
  • Empties trash cans.
  • Cleans refrigerators, freezers, ice machines, coffee makers, stoves, and ovens.
  • Acts as a lead worker to staff and/or volunteers.
  • Assigns daily duties to staff.
  • Trains and instructs employees in proper methods and procedures.
  • Informs supervisor of any issues that arise.

Requirements

  • Ability to meet attendance requirements.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate the English language effectively.
  • Ability to cook, taste and smell food.
  • Ability to perform continuous walking, stooping, standing, and some climbing.
  • Duties performed standing and requires squatting, climbing, bending, and walking.
  • Extensive physical effort associated with walking, standing, lifting and carrying light to moderately heavy objects (up to 50 lbs.).
  • Food Handler’s Certificate (or ability to obtain within established timeframe).
  • Valid State Driver’s License.

Skills

  • Bilingual Spanish/English Highly Preferred!
  • Knowledge of proper cooking methods and procedures.
  • Knowledge of meal planning techniques.
  • Knowledge of effective cleaning and sanitizing practices including proper safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of acceptable food storage and cleaning techniques.
  • Ability to cook nutritional, tasteful and safe food for large groups in a timely manner.
  • Ability to properly clean kitchen appliances and utensils.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work independently.

Work Type

  • 40 hours per week

Experience Level

  • Two years experience cooking food for large groups, OR Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
