About the Role

Under general direction, assist the Hydraulic Engineering team to perform technical engineering and drafting of drawings and other graphic materials related to planning, design and construction of wastewater collection systems and drainage facilities projects.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare engineering drawings and other graphic material using manual drafting methods, computer-aided design and drafting software (AutoCAD), 3D renderings, and other software tools in compliance with engineering drafting standards.
  • Conduct field investigation and gather, collect and calculate field and department data, records and reports for the preparation of designs and drawings.
  • Make preliminary checks and review drawings to ensure accuracy, engineering sufficiency and conformance to specifications.
  • Assist in the preparation of cost and quantity estimates for engineering projects.
  • Process contractor construction shop submittals through logging, transcribing and filing of materials; indexing, reproducing and maintaining files, drawings and computer databases.
  • Make trigonometric and other mathematical computations in the course of drafting work.
  • Operate and perform minor maintenance on equipment to produce drawings and other documents.
  • Review drawing submittals from utility agencies or other City Departments and utilize the information submitted in the preparation of construction drawings.
  • Research and review record drawings to obtain as-built information.
  • Update and maintain engineering documents and drawing records.
  • Prepare memos, engineering and field reports, and letters.
  • Learn new drafting systems and standards as necessary.
  • Update Geographic Information System (GIS) base maps for City’s wastewater collection system facilities.
  • Assist the hydraulic engineering section to provide sewer system information to other agencies, the general public and contractors, and investigate flooding and odor complaints.
  • May drive a City vehicle to and from work sites.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years of verified civil (including structural or transportation), electrical, or mechanical technical engineering drafting experience using CAD or BIM systems to prepare engineering drawings.
  • Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
  • Applicants must possess a valid State of California driver’s license with no restrictions that would prohibit them from legally performing the essential functions and duties of the role.
