About the Role

Veolia operates and maintains two Organic Processing Facilities for the City of Toronto, transforming waste into biogas and composting material. This role involves process control, laboratory testing, wastewater management, and equipment operation within these facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Control and operate automatic and semi-automatic machines and related equipment.
  • Monitor flow meters, gauges, and related controls through instrument panels, computer terminals, and programmable logic control units.
  • Record operating conditions and data in a shift log.
  • Use SCADA for process monitoring, systems control, and equipment operation.
  • Perform field tests (chemical, physical, and biological) to pace chemical dosages and alter unit processes.
  • Sample wastewater, sludge, and gasses according to schedule.
  • Make independent decisions concerning process control changes and direct the activities of other operators.
  • Ensure conformance to process specifications.
  • Diagnose basic operational problems and take corrective action.
  • Verify and report suspected malfunctions and variances to the supervisor.
  • Perform manual labor including filling and emptying machine bins and cleaning equipment, facilities, and grounds.
  • Practice good housekeeping and properly dispose of waste according to safety and environmental policies.

Requirements

  • High school education or equivalent with effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Associate's degree in a science or technical area preferred.
  • Understanding of Digesters, wastewater treatment processes, water quality assurance, maintenance strategy, and laboratory procedures.
  • Effective skills in troubleshooting, problem-solving, and team building.
  • Ingenuity and initiative required to coordinate problem resolution and execute schedule requirements.
  • Over five years of experience in a related position and environment with knowledge of water/wastewater treatment methods.
  • Experience in operation of Anaerobic Digestion highly regarded.
  • Ability to accurately follow procedures.
  • Analytical skills to understand data and graphs and make decisions based on data.
  • Proficiency in the care and use of all site-specific, facility-required PPE.
  • Ability to use computer systems such as Email, SCADA trending, and data retrieval.
  • Must be able to respond to emergency calls and work extended hours.
  • Demonstrated commitment to compliance with applicable laws and regulations, Code of Business Conduct, and other Company policies.
  • Ability to perform basic math.
  • Reading text, document use, numeracy, writing, oral communication, attention to detail.
  • Good use of the English language.
  • Deadline oriented.
  • Work well with others.
  • Good hand-eye coordination.
  • Repetitive motions required.
  • Rotating throughout the facility as required.
  • Reliable and dependable on start and finish times.
  • Must provide own transportation.
  • Must be immediately eligible to work legally in Canada; employer will not sponsor.
