About the Role

Accurately prepare tissue samples for pathologist diagnosis using approved department procedures. Utilize complex problem-solving skills for tissue processing and instrument issues. Exercise independent judgment, theoretical knowledge, and responsibility. Follow all regulatory lab requirements. Develop skills to improve long-term department goals, including policy and procedure development and implementation. Act as a technology consultant and key operator for specialized instrumentation. Participate in grossing of biopsy specimens in the trim room.

Responsibilities

Register specimens in the LIS.
Process, embed, cut, and stain tissue to produce high-quality slides.
Prepare solutions for tissue processing and slide staining.
Perform special stains and IHC stains accurately.
Monitor reagents for lab use, adhering to proper dilutions and expiration dates.
Perform maintenance on all equipment per procedures.
Complete required mandatories and continuing education as established by the department.
Monitor reagent and supply inventories, notifying appropriate personnel when reorder levels are reached.
Perform frozen sections for the pathologist.
Recognize and analyze problems using scientific methods, reporting issues to the supervisor or lead tech.
Participate in maintaining department technical readiness to meet regulatory compliance.
Comply with all procedures and company policies.
Assume responsibility for channeling essential information to appropriate personnel.
Participate in department meetings.
Support a positive work environment and work cooperatively with staff and other departments.
Perform additional duties and responsibilities as requested by the manager.
Perform gross examination on biopsy specimens and submit specimens for processing, accurately maintaining patient/sample identification.

Requirements

Associate’s degree in Clinical Laboratory Technology or related field required or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
At least two years of relevant Medical Technology Laboratory experience required.
New York State Department of Education License or Limited Permit as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist, Certified Histological Technician or Clinical Laboratory Technician.
