About the Role

Northeastern University London is seeking a Junior Physics Technician to support the delivery of high-quality education in its teaching laboratories. This role involves providing comprehensive technical and laboratory support for Physics and Engineering programmes, ensuring laboratory environments, equipment, and materials are prepared, maintained, and compliant with safety standards.

Responsibilities

• Conduct daily laboratory safety checks, including inspection of fire exits, electrical isolation points, fume extraction, and laser safety interlocks.
• Ensure all hazardous materials are correctly labelled, stored, and disposed of in accordance with legislation and policy.
• Prepare, review, and maintain risk assessments for practical activities.
• Complete and maintain accurate equipment inventory records and waste disposal logs.
• Respond promptly to equipment faults, spillages, incidents, or near-misses, completing relevant documentation.
• Ensure personal protective equipment (PPE) stocks are adequate, fit for purpose, and correctly used.
• Support delivery of induction and refresher safety briefings for students and staff.
• Maintain knowledge of current electrical safety, laser safety, and relevant standards.
• Prepare, set up, and clear down laboratory practicals for Physics and Engineering sessions.
• Accurately assemble circuits, optical set-ups, and mechanical rigs.
• Set up and calibrate analytical and measurement instruments.
• Maintain and check lasers and other specialist apparatus.
• Assist Faculty during live practical sessions, providing technical guidance to students.
• Prepare and label samples, components, and reference standards.
• Maintain a tidy, organised, and fully stocked laboratory environment.
• Carry out routine preventative maintenance, cleaning, and calibration of laboratory equipment.
• Maintain up-to-date calibration and maintenance logs for all instruments.
• Identify and report equipment faults; arrange or assist with repairs.
• Support implementation and monitoring of quality assurance procedures within the laboratory.
• Assist in the development and review of SOPs and experimental method validation.
• Contribute to laboratory audits as required.
• Monitor stock levels of electronic components, consumables, spare parts, and laboratory sundries.
• Receive, check, and correctly store deliveries of laboratory materials.
• Maintain accurate stock records using the departmental inventory management system.
• Assist in obtaining quotations, raising purchase orders, and liaising with suppliers.
• Ensure correct disposal and documentation of expired, surplus, or hazardous stock.
• Provide technical guidance and hands-on assistance to students during supervised practicals.
• Support the induction of new students into laboratory protocols, instrument operation, and safe working practices.
• Assist with the preparation of student-facing resources such as laboratory handbooks and safety guides.
• Support academic staff in the development of new practical activities.
• Supervise student use of the laboratory during technician-led open-access sessions.
• Maintain accurate records of laboratory usage, maintenance activities, safety checks, waste disposal, and stock movements.
• Complete and file relevant documentation in a timely manner.
• Contribute to the preparation of reports for management and reviews.
• Attend team meetings, training sessions, and CPD activities.
• Undertake any other reasonable duties commensurate with the grade and responsibilities of the post.

Requirements

• A relevant qualification in Physics, Engineering, or a related science subject (e.g. A-level, BTEC, HNC, or equivalent), or demonstrable equivalent practical experience.
• Basic understanding of physics principles and laboratory practice.
• Good practical/manual skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to follow instructions and health and safety procedures accurately.
• Good organisational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks to deadlines.
• Good communication skills and ability to work well with academic staff and students.
• Willingness to undertake training and develop new technical skills.
• Basic IT skills (e.g. email, stock records, scheduling software).
• Foundation degree, HND, or equivalent in a science or engineering discipline (desirable).
• Previous experience working in a laboratory or technical support environment, ideally in an educational setting (desirable).
• Familiarity with common physics laboratory equipment (desirable).
• Basic electronics, mechanical, or workshop skills (desirable).
• Knowledge of COSHH, risk assessment, or general laboratory safety frameworks (desirable).
• Must be able to demonstrate eligibility to work in the UK.
• May require a basic or enhanced DBS check.
