About the Role
As Principal Engineer, you are the senior-most individual contributor on a small, high-leverage team. Your primary responsibility is to ship new products and systems rapidly with high quality, integrating AI as a core capability. You will set the standard for product judgment, code quality, design, production rigor, and hiring through your own work. You will also own and maintain the infrastructure and backend systems, ensuring their health and making key architectural decisions. You will collaborate directly with the CTO and partner across Product, Clinical, and Security teams.
Responsibilities
- Ship new product surface area rapidly, taking ideas from conception to production with a high quality bar.
- Stand up AI-native workflows for the team, defining patterns, evaluations, guardrails, and prompts for AI tools like Claude and Cursor.
- Maintain the health of backend and infrastructure, ensuring robust shipping and stable production environments.
- Manage CI/CD, deploy hygiene, observability, and architectural decisions.
- Set the hiring bar by conducting technical screens and attracting strong candidates.
Requirements
- Proven track record of using AI to significantly accelerate product and system development without compromising quality.
- Strong opinions and demonstrated experience with AI tools, understanding their strengths and limitations.
- Excellent product judgment, with the ability to understand user needs, prioritize features, and make independent decisions.
- Unusually high quality bar for code, design, production rigor, and defining 'done'.
- Founding-engineer mentality or experience as an ex-CTO/VPE returning to coding.
- Effectiveness in small, high-trust teams with broad scope and ambiguous problems.
- Solid backend experience in Go or Kotlin.
- Competence with AWS or GCP and production Kubernetes.
- Full-stack comfort across Node/TypeScript services and React/Next.js.
