About the Role

Staff Forward Deployed Engineers (FDE) are senior technical leaders who address ambiguous, high-impact problems at the intersection of customer environments and internal products. They own customer engagements, influence product direction, and drive engineering execution, using field learnings to shape reusable product capabilities and technical strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Own complex customer engagements and technical workstreams, especially those with ambiguity.
  • Build deep understanding of customer architecture, business goals, and success criteria to shape technical approaches.
  • Act as a trusted technical counterpart to customer and internal engineering leaders and stakeholders.
  • Lead architectural design for customer-facing solutions and platform capabilities within the FDE domain.
  • Translate ambiguous, high-level problems into clear technical direction and implementation plans.
  • Write and review production-quality code, troubleshoot complex failures, and set high standards for systems and integrations.
  • Identify systemic issues in tooling, architecture, or delivery and drive durable fixes.
  • Use field engagements to surface domain-level patterns, product gaps, and technical risks, translating them into actionable proposals and roadmap input.
  • Influence technical vision for the FDE domain, balancing customer impact, time-to-market, technical debt, and platform quality.
  • Determine which field-learned patterns become reusable product capabilities or platform investments.
  • Lead cross-functional workstreams with Product and Engineering to define requirements and resolve tradeoffs.
  • Drive consensus on large, abstract, or contentious technical issues affecting multiple teams.
  • Create high-quality technical artifacts to align stakeholders and improve team communication and execution.
  • Mentor senior engineers, share best practices, and help others make strong technical decisions.
  • Establish or improve mechanisms, standards, and operating practices for high-quality decision-making and resilient solutions.
  • Model leadership principles through clarity, accountability, customer obsession, and cross-functional partnership in ambiguous situations.

Requirements

  • 9+ years of relevant engineering experience, including hands-on work in production systems and complex customer or enterprise environments.
  • Demonstrated success leading technical domains or initiatives spanning multiple teams, with ownership of technical direction and delivery outcomes.
  • Strong experience designing and implementing production-grade integrations, platforms, or distributed systems in ambiguous environments.
  • Strong technical judgment, balancing customer impact, speed, maintainability, and operational risk.
  • Ability to shape technical direction based on customer and business context.
  • Ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Ability to raise the bar for other engineers through mentorship and technical leadership.
  • Willingness and ability to travel up to 30% to customer sites as needed.
