About the Role

The Patient Companion/Safety Sitter provides continuous, direct observation and basic non-invasive patient support to promote patient safety, comfort and well-being. This role supports licensed nursing staff by performing limited, clearly defined tasks under the direction of a Registered Nurse (RN).

Responsibilities

  • Provide continuous 1:1 observation for patients requiring enhanced safety monitoring.
  • Maintain a safe patient environment and immediately report changes in condition, behavior or safety concerns to the RN.
  • Utilize de-escalation techniques and therapeutic communication.
  • Ensure call light and personal items are within patient reach.
  • Participates in bedside shift report with direct care staff members.
  • Completes observation documentation using assigned tools or checklists.
  • Takes initiative in rendering service or responding to needs.
  • Assists with keeping the patient's room safe, orderly and clean.
  • Obtains and records limited vital signs and immediately reports abnormal findings to RN.
  • Measures and records non-evasive intake and output, and reports concerns.
  • Assists with limited mobility and repositioning of patient.
  • Assist with toileting, providing water, snacks or meals as ordered.
  • Respond to call lights and communicate patient needs to staff.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be 18 years of age.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain alert with uninterrupted focus on the patient at all times.
  • Ability to obtain BLS certification.
  • Successful candidates might be required to undergo a background verification with an external vendor.
