About the Role
The Director, Accident Benefits Claims – National Operations provides strategic and operational leadership for the accident benefits claims function, ensuring performance, consistency, and results. This role ensures high-quality, equitable, and consistent claims outcomes in line with company objectives, regulatory requirements, and member expectations. The Director translates corporate claims strategy into operational plans, performance frameworks, and governance practices, promoting consistency, technical excellence, member experience, and financial performance across the accident benefits business portfolio. This role partners with senior leadership and cross-functional stakeholders to influence claims settlement strategy, oversee risks, and lead initiatives that enhance operational efficiency, support transformation, and sustain accident benefits claims performance nationally.
Responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership for the accident benefits claims function, translating corporate direction into operational plans, priorities, and performance outcomes.
- Implement and continuously refine claims strategies, policies, and best practices to enhance operational efficiency, technical excellence, and service delivery.
- Align accident benefits claims handling activities to ensure consistent, high-quality claims outcomes, strong productivity, and an exceptional member experience.
- Monitor key performance indicators and claims trends (including quality, cycle time, and financial performance), using data to implement measures for improved efficiency, risk mitigation, and enhanced outcomes.
- Be accountable for the financial performance of the accident benefits business portfolio, including claims cost management, expense oversight, budgeting, and forecasting.
- Provide effective leadership, coaching, and direction to Claims Managers and/or Leaders, building leadership capabilities, succession pools, and a high-performance culture.
Requirements
- Over 10 years of experience in P&C claims, including accident benefits.
- At least five years of progressive leadership experience, including managing managers and developing leadership capabilities.
- Experience leading multiple teams or regions, or a functional claims portfolio.
- Post-secondary degree or equivalent experience.
- Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation required or preferred; advanced designation (e.g., FCIP), an asset.
- Strong ability to influence key stakeholders and work effectively within a matrix structure.
- Proven ability to develop managers, build succession pools, and foster a high-performance culture.
- Demonstrated experience building influential relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Proven ability to provide stable and effective leadership in complex and high-pressure environments while maintaining sound judgment, accountability, and a focus on operational results.
- Proven ability to foster clarity and eliminate confusion through effective communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Experience effectively leading cross-functional transformation and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Strong expertise in accident benefits legislation, claims management, and regulatory frameworks.
- Experience in supporting governance, risk management, and litigation practices in a regulated environment.
- Strong financial acumen, including accountability for claims cost performance, expense management, and forecasting.
