About the Role

This role focuses on performing activities associated with evaluating, developing, recommending, implementing, and carrying out policies and procedures related to the delivery of high-quality patient care. It involves providing language services, including translation and support for individuals with physical or mental impairments affecting language. This is a professional individual contributor role that may direct the work of others or manage processes and programs, requiring advanced education and practical experience. The role operates independently with general supervision, influencing others through explanations of facts, policies, and practices.

Responsibilities

Interprets spoken language from English to the target language and vice versa for patients, physicians, and staff.
Interprets both culture and language.
Participates in family meetings with social workers to assist with forms, financial aid, and patient transfers.
Contacts non-English speaking patients to obtain consent, notify of appointments, and explain procedures, diagnosis, and medical history.
May accompany non-English speaking patients to the operating room or other departments and participate in patient/client care conferences.
Translates correspondence, brochures, documents, and special diagnostic procedures from English into the target language.
May be required to take on-call requests for emergencies during nights and weekends.
Maintains collaborative relationships with peers and colleagues to achieve goals and foster a positive work environment.
Adheres to applicable policies and procedures related to patient/client care and personnel qualifications.
Demonstrates knowledge of reporting corporate compliance concerns to the CEO or Chief Compliance Officer.
Ensures compliance with guidelines from regulatory agencies (DPH, ERISA, etc.) and Tufts Medicine policies and procedures.
Practices confidentiality principles set by the agency and federal HIPAA/HITECH guidelines.
Participates in all mandatory in-services.

Requirements

High School diploma or equivalent.
Medical Interpreter Certification from an accredited college or university OR Certification from a Medical Interpreter training course and successful completion of a third-party medical interpreter competency exam.
One (1) year of relevant interpreting experience.
Bilingual.

Skills

Ability to read/write and communicate in both languages.
Ability to provide effective and clear interpretation and communication.
Advanced knowledge in interpreting techniques and medical terminology, basic anatomy and physiology, diagnostic procedures, and treatments in both English and target language.
High degree of courtesy and tact in contacts with patients and families regarding sensitive or confidential information.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Ability to function well in very busy situations.
Responsible and reliable.
Good organization skills.

Experience Level

Three (3) years of relevant experience (Preferred)

Education Level

High School diploma or equivalent
Medical Interpreter Certification from an accredited college or university
