About the Role

The Counselor provides support and assistance to clients at one of the Progress programs, advocating for and responding to their treatment and rehabilitation needs. This role involves crisis intervention, treatment plan development, and case coordination.

Responsibilities

• Conduct intake interviews with prospective clients.
• Orient new clients to the program and facility.
• Respond to psychiatric and/or medical emergency situations and perform crisis intervention.
• Assist clients in emergency evacuations.
• Develop treatment plans with client participation.
• Communicate with referral sources and other treatment personnel.
• Complete intake and discharge paperwork and maintain client progress records.
• Initiate and participate in discharge planning.
• Lead or co-lead group sessions and house meetings.
• Assume case coordinating responsibilities for clients.
• Relay clinical and house-status information to other staff.
• Monitor and record client medications.
• Participate in meal planning, preparation, and join clients for meals.
• Attend staff meetings, supervision sessions, and case consultation meetings.
• Consult with leadership on case review, medications, and group dynamics.
• Be responsible for the physical plant, including minor cleaning and repairs.
• Report suspected abuse of clients to appropriate agencies.
• Promote the social rehabilitation philosophy.
• Work overnight, awake and alert shifts.
• Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.
• Inform leadership of any personal events that may affect job performance.
• Lead and/or participate in outings and recreational activities.
• Shop for groceries and household items with clients.
• Drive clients to treatment-related destinations.
• Attend programmatic and administrative meetings as a representative of the program.

Requirements

• Must be able to work overnight, awake and alert shifts.
• Must be able to communicate effectively with staff, clients, and other providers both orally and in writing.
• Must demonstrate good judgment and emotional stability.
• Must be able to negotiate several flights of stairs multiple times during each work shift.
• Must be able to lift and carry 20 lb. packages multiple times during the work shift.
• Must demonstrate ongoing clearance with the California State Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing Division.
• Must maintain training certification and demonstrated capacity to perform basic First Aid and CPR.
• Basic word processing skills.
• Maintain computer requirements of the City and County of San Francisco Community Behavioral Health Services.
