About the Role

Housing Specialists play a crucial role in identifying housing resources, building relationships with property managers and landlords, and assisting residents in securing stable housing. This position involves direct client interaction, case management, and collaboration with various agencies to meet placement goals.

Responsibilities

• Conduct on-the-ground outreach to identify new housing resources.
• Develop and maintain relationships with brokers, landlords, and management offices for housing placements.
• Facilitate appointments and accompany residents to apartment viewings.
• Conduct housing inspections and complete pre-clearance forms.
• Work with brokers/landlords to obtain required documentation for subsidy packages.
• Meet residents regularly to assess needs and schedule housing viewing opportunities.
• Maintain up-to-date case notes.
• Assist clients with completing housing applications through NYC Housing Connect and other portals.
• Collaborate with social service teams, DHS, and HRA to expedite placements.
• Assist in meeting performance objectives and placement goals.
• Ensure client housing needs are addressed in a timely manner.
• Conduct workshops for residents on the housing search, application, and interview process.
• Teach residents self-advocacy skills for seeking permanent housing.
• Conduct workshops for landlords/brokers on housing subsidy changes.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Familiarity with the NYC Shelter System with any population (single adults, mental health, substance use, HIV/AIDS, or related fields).
• Strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills with a focus on client services.
• Demonstrated ability to interact effectively and collaboratively with diverse residents, staff, and external partners.
• Ability to exercise good judgment and apply problem-solving skills.
• Experience working collaboratively in a team-oriented and outcome-focused environment.
• Ability to monitor and manage a variety of assigned tasks.
• Must be able to lift up to 5 pounds at times.
• Must be able to access and navigate facilities.
