About the Role

CFR is seeking a Community Engagement Advocate to coordinate and manage daily work on community engagement initiatives and projects. This role is critical for cultivating and maintaining relationships with community partners, ensuring direct engagement with the communities CFR represents beyond times of crisis. The Community Engagement Unit aims to streamline CFR's outreach efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Provide input and assistance with Development efforts.
  • Work on special projects/initiatives in collaboration with supervisors.
  • Cultivate relationships with New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) Tenant Associations.
  • Cultivate relationships with community-based organizations.
  • Coordinate community events, including know your rights sessions and roundtables.
  • Attend meetings with internal and external teams as needed.
  • Provide support to Early Defense and Family Defense Teams for program outreach.
  • Assist with data entry and tracking needs.
  • Update and manage a community engagement calendar.
  • Schedule and manage internal meetings between Early Defense and Policy teams.
  • Keep detailed records of community engagement activities.
  • Assist in keeping staff updated on Community Engagement Team activities.
  • Maintain a database of contacted community-based organizations.
  • Assist with distributing flyers and informational pamphlets.

Requirements

  • Candidates who have personally experienced and navigated the child welfare and/or family policing systems or criminal legal system, youth legal system, or immigration enforcement system are strongly preferred.
  • At least 3 years of experience advocating on behalf of New York City communities.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Experience planning community-facing events.
  • Experience tabling and information sharing with the general public.
  • Knowledge of community resources in 1 or more of the boroughs in which CFR practices.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and a commitment to building strong relationships.
  • Strong time management and communication skills.
  • Self-motivated.
  • Experience in public speaking.
  • Ability to work nights and some weekends.
  • Ability to lift and carry 50lbs.
  • Fluency in Spanish, Mandarin or other Chinese languages, French, Bengali, Russian, or another language spoken by CFR clients is ideal.
  • Experience being directly impacted by the family policing system, criminal legal system, immigration enforcement system, or the youth legal system is ideal.
  • Residence in one of the communities that CFR serves is ideal.
  • Experience working alongside attorneys, social workers, and parent advocates is ideal.
  • Experience in community organizing and advocacy is ideal.
  • Experience and familiarity with CFR’s priority legislation, as well as related policy areas is ideal.
