About the Role
We are seeking a seasoned full-stack software engineer to join the Tax Accounts team. This team simplifies the complexity of dealing with hundreds of tax agencies, managing every customer's tax account data, including registrations, authorizations, and rates, to ensure accurate withholding, payment, and filing. The role involves operating across the full product lifecycle, focusing on clean frontend code, reliable backend APIs, and data models within a complex compliance domain, as well as automation to keep accounts synchronized with agencies.
Responsibilities
- Design, build, and test systems for employer and employee tax accounts, including agency registrations, power-of-attorney authorizations, tax notices, agency filings, and tax setup across jurisdictions.
- Build automation to request and maintain access with tax agencies on behalf of customers, utilizing bots, data exchanges, and agency-event pipelines to ensure accuracy and prevent filing failures.
- Model complex, jurisdiction-specific compliance rules into maintainable systems, owning reliability, performance, and correctness in a domain where accuracy is critical.
- Collaborate with Product, Design, Tax Operations, and PEO teams to translate customer and compliance challenges into solutions, then prototype, iterate, and launch.
- Mentor other engineers and contribute to solving complex problems at scale within a highly intricate domain.
- Build products that customers value.
Requirements
- 8+ years of software development experience.
- Experience owning multi-quarter projects that solve complex engineering problems and deliver measurable customer impact at scale.
- Experience building scalable solutions that reduce customer pain, with a strong sense of ownership for reliability, performance, and correctness.
- Comfort designing data models and APIs for complex, rules-heavy domains like compliance, tax, or payments, where edge cases and accuracy are paramount.
- Ability to mentor engineers to enhance their performance and impact.
- Ability to communicate effectively with engineering teams and business stakeholders.
- Experience in, or interest in working with, Ruby on Rails.
- Appreciation for a collaborative, test-driven environment.
- Ability to build well-structured, maintainable, and well-documented code.
- Onboarding requires travel to Gusto's office.
