About the Role
The Air Import Specialist is responsible for managing the complete air import process, including coordinating shipments, ensuring customs compliance, providing customer service, and controlling costs. This role involves collaboration with airlines, freight forwarders, customs brokers, and internal teams to ensure timely and efficient handling of air freight shipments.
Responsibilities
- Manage end-to-end air import operations, ensuring timely and accurate movement of freight and related documentation.
- Prepare, review, and verify import documents such as air waybills, commercial invoices, and packing lists for accuracy and compliance.
- Coordinate with airlines, overseas agents, truckers, and vendors to track shipments, secure competitive rates, and ensure on-time delivery.
- Oversee customs clearance by submitting necessary paperwork, paying duties/taxes, and ensuring full regulatory compliance.
- Maintain effective communication with customers, vendors, and internal teams to resolve issues and provide updates.
- Monitor and control import-related costs, ensuring adherence to budgets and service level expectations.
- Verify shipment weights, volumes, and rates, calculate and confirm pricing as needed.
- Stay current on import regulations, tariff classifications, and process improvements to enhance operational efficiency.
- Escalate shipment or compliance issues to management when necessary and assist with other department duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Supply Chain, or a related field (preferred).
- Minimum 2 years of experience in Air Import or Freight Forwarding operations.
- Previous experience with CargoWise is required.
- Strong knowledge of customs regulations, bonded cargo, and international trade laws.
- Solid understanding of quoting, carrier costs, margins, and market rates.
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
- Strong attention to detail, and organizational skills.
- Customer service oriented.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word) and standard logistics tracking systems and tools.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift 15 pounds at times.
