About the Role

Support the day-to-day delivery and management of all lighting and electrical requirements for Donmar productions and related projects to the highest possible standards. Play a proactive part in the running and operation of the Production Department, supporting effective planning and management of departmental and building maintenance.

Responsibilities

• Work with the Head of Lighting and creative teams to deliver lighting and electrical requirements for productions.
• Support the Head of Lighting in running the Lighting Department during fit ups, get outs, focus sessions, technical rehearsals, and live performances.
• Program lighting desks (ETC APEX/EOS) across all spaces.
• Attend production meetings, site visits, rehearsals, and performances.
• Support the Head of Lighting in the design, build, and installation of practicals and electrical effects.
• Support the Head of Lighting and Deputy Head of Sound & Video in planning, delivery, and maintenance of audio and video requirements.
• Provide show cover as Duty Tech or Lighting/Sound/Video operator.
• Prepare productions for storage, transfers, and tours, including creating handover paperwork.
• Deputise for the Head of Lighting in periods of absence.
• Assist in the management of departmental and production expenditure, providing costings and records.
• Participate in the recruitment, management, and scheduling of casual and freelance technicians.
• Ensure appropriate training and induction is given to all lighting staff.
• Provide technical and operational support for the work of other departments from a lighting and electrical perspective.
• Provide cover for the Deputy Head of Sound & Video in supporting all Sound and Video work.
• Identify, plan, and undertake maintenance, repairs, and improvements to the Donmar’s buildings and infrastructure.
• Liaise with and supervise outside contractors carrying out technical and building maintenance.
• Prepare and run maintenance work during designated dark periods.
• Ensure the upkeep and maintenance of Lighting/Sound/Video temporary equipment and permanent infrastructure.
• Ensure all spaces and technical equipment are legally compliant and well maintained, keeping maintenance records updated.
• Create, maintain, and promote a safe working environment.
• Maintain knowledge of Health and Safety legislation relevant to the Production and Lighting departments.
• Identify hazards and complete risk assessments for all departmental activities.
• Produce and maintain Health & Safety records relevant to the department and its equipment.
• Support colleagues in the effective management of the Production Department.
• Advise on new equipment, capital, and maintenance spending.
• Undertake job-specific training as required.
• Act as a key holder for the Theatre building.
• Participate in and support the Donmar’s Participation, Work Experience, and Apprenticeship programmes.
• Ensure creative teams and artists feel welcome, engaged, and supported.
• Undertake any other reasonable duties as required.

Requirements

• Demonstrable experience and understanding of working in lighting for live performance in a professional environment.
• Prior full-time or freelance experience working in the lighting department of a producing theatre.
• Leadership skills and the ability to manage a team, including in fit ups and get outs.
• Strong and current knowledge of the rigging, operation, maintenance, and basic repair of lighting equipment.
• Excellent working knowledge of ETC APEX/EOS control desks, networks, and dimmers.
• Intermediate to advanced programming skills on ETC APEX/EOS control desks, including experience of programming mid to large-scale productions.
• Intermediate to advanced knowledge of TCP/IP networks.
• Strong working knowledge of lighting control protocols (e.g: DMX, MIDI, MSC, OSC, sACN).
• Ability to read, understand, and implement technical drawings.
• Knowledge of Health and Safety legislation related to the theatre industry (LOLER, PUWER, CDM (2015), HSWA (1974), EAWR (1989)).
• Computer literate and experienced with either Microsoft Office or Google Apps Suite.
• Ability to work well within a small dedicated team in a positive and collaborative manner.
• Excellent organisational and time management skills.
• Ability to work under pressure and be a creative and resourceful problem solver.
• Ability to establish and maintain good relationships with contractors and suppliers.
• Comfortable and experienced in Working at Height.
• Ability to produce and edit technical drawings in Vectorworks and AutoCAD (Desirable).
• Experience with recording and documenting shows via MLA, Vor, or Stamp (Desirable).
• Experience of making, adapting, and repairing lighting practicals (Desirable).
• Experience and training in Working at Height using access equipment and PPE (Desirable).
• Working knowledge of Sound and Video technology, including control software (Desirable).
• Basic carpentry, metalwork, and soldering skills (Desirable).
• Electrical qualifications (e.g: BS7909) (Desirable).
• Enthusiasm for and an interest in the arts (Desirable).

About the Company

• The Production Department is led by the Director of Technical and Production [DTP]. The rest of the Department is made up of: Head of Lighting (Sound and Video Supervisor) [HoLSV], Deputy Head of Sound and Video [DSV], Head of Stage, Deputy Head of Stage, Head of Costume, Deputy Head of Costume, Production Assistant. Freelance Production Managers, Production Sound Engineers, Production Video Engineers and Stage Management teams are recruited on a show-by-show basis.
