About the Role
We’re looking for an XR / Virtual Production Studio Manager to join the team, based at our Leicester Square office with a focus on smooth operation of our brand new state-of-the-art XR studio. This is a role for someone with strong technical studio video experience, particularly with virtual production workflows and ideally experience using Disguise software and hardware. You’ll play an important role in delivering high-quality XR and visual content, supporting multi-camera workflows, vision mixing, routing, lighting and record/playback systems. You’ll also help improve the way the team works through workflow automation, documentation and practical problem-solving.
Responsibilities
- Manage the day-to-day operation of the XR / virtual production stage, ensuring the studio is fully production-ready for every shoot.
- Act as the key point of contact for productions booked into the XR studio, briefing directors and DPs on the stage’s capabilities and constraints.
- Coordinate with our Production Management team to ensure smooth operational flow across bookings with kit and crew.
- Collaborate closely with Engineering, Production, Podcasts, Radio and the wider Video team to ensure the studio meets the business’ production needs.
- Operate and configure Disguise media servers and show files to drive real-time camera tracking, rendering and playback for XR productions.
- Oversee Stype RedSpy 5.0 motion-tracked camera systems – alongside RED V-Raptor X cameras, ensuring accurate calibration and reliable integration with the Disguise pipeline.
- Manage LED volume/wall calibration, colour matching and genlock across the video and camera signal chain.
- Work with modern multi-camera video technology, including vision mixers, routers, record/playback systems and PTZ (Sony FR7) camera systems.
- Support camera and lighting setups for virtual production, including understanding of formats, codecs, exposure and DMX lighting systems.
- Maintain relationships with Disguise and other key equipment vendors, staying current with software updates, firmware and best practice.
- Build and refine workflow automation, macros and pipeline efficiencies, particularly within Disguise’s Designer software.
- Troubleshoot technical issues quickly and effectively, from tracking dropouts to render or playback issues, in a fast-moving production environment.
- Create and maintain clear technical documentation, including studio SOPs, calibration guides and crew training materials.
- Communicate technical information clearly, adapting the level of detail for audiences ranging from crew to senior production and talent.
Requirements
- Proven experience managing a technical studio, broadcast facility or virtual production stage.
- Strong understanding of virtual production / XR workflows, including camera tracking, real-time rendering and LED volume operation.
- Experience with Disguise software and hardware, ideally including show file build, RenderStream setup and calibration.
- Experience with PTZ cameras and strong basic camera knowledge, including formats, codecs and workflows.
- Experience designing and implementing workflows automation, including building macros and using automation tools.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think on your feet under production pressure.
- Strong leadership, collaboration and stakeholder management skills, with confidence working across multiple departments.
- Professionalism when working with talent, directors and production teams.
- Strong technical communication skills, with the ability to scale conversations to suit the audience.
- Good task prioritisation, scheduling and time management.
- A proactive approach to learning, including self-led learning and research.
- Hands-on experience with Disguise Designer and/or Disguise media servers in a live production or virtual production environment.
- Experience with RED V-Raptor X, or similar high-end cinema cameras, in a motion-tracked or virtual production setting.
- Experience with camera tracking systems (e.g. Stype, Mo-Sys, Ncam) and integrating tracking data with real-time engines such as Unreal Engine.
- Live production experience.
- Understanding of DMX lighting systems.
- Basic knowledge of Unreal Engine for virtual production content and environments.
- A background that combines both technical and production experience.
