About the Role
The After School Chess Teacher leads an after school course that meets children where they are and encourages a deepening understanding of chess strategy. This role is well suited to an educator who is energized by teaching strategy and critical thinking to elementary-aged students in a progressive, child-centered setting.
Responsibilities
- Work cooperatively with administrators and supervisors to create and document age-appropriate chess curriculum for each age group
- Teach chess strategy in a way that meets children at their current level of understanding and supports continued growth
- Build relationships with students and create an engaging learning environment
- Participate as a member of a collaborative, cooperative After School program, sharing information and strategies to sustain a healthy classroom community
- Use classroom management skills to run and support an energetic classroom of children while maintaining and reinforcing health and safety rules
- Support students in moving safely through the hallways and in and out of the building, following building-wide health and safety regulations
- Oversee the safe transfer of children to after school programming and dismissal to authorized adults
Requirements
- High school diploma
- Knowledge of chess strategy and instruction
- Willingness to collaborate and work as part of a team, as well as develop skills in working with individual children, small groups, and the whole class
- Curiosity about and commitment to learning more about Bank Street’s approach to this type of learning
- Bachelor’s degree
- Experience teaching chess to the age groups indicated
- Experience managing a classroom and teaching children
- Experience with progressive education
- Prior experience working as part of the Bank Street community
