About the Role

The Director of Counseling Services will manage counseling services within Student Health and Counseling (SHAC), coordinate services with the Director of Health Services, maintain a clinical caseload, and develop outreach programs. Responsibilities include strategic planning, data collection, budget management, staff development, and supervision.

Responsibilities

• Maintain a minimal client caseload while balancing student needs and administrative demands.
• Provide clinical assessments and counseling for students with various mental health concerns.
• Maintain knowledge of diagnostic criteria, therapeutic interventions, and make clinical/ethical decisions.
• Coordinate the department’s crisis response efforts.
• Serve as an advocate for students and a referral source for off-campus needs.
• Maintain professional clinical notes.
• Attend department meetings and interface with staff on programming initiatives.
• Collaborate with the campus community to ensure a safe campus, potentially serving on committees like the Behavioral Intervention Team and SafetyNet.
• Develop relationships and educate the community about the Counseling Center's resources.
• Guide counseling center staff through supervision, leadership, and promoting a team approach.
• Oversee Clarkson’s telehealth contract and address service concerns.
• Oversee campus-wide mental health awareness efforts, including Mental Health First Aid.
• Ensure compliance with state and federal law, particularly confidentiality.
• Provide leadership and oversight for the counseling internship program.
• Assist with staff development initiatives.
• Participate in Workplace Wellness programming and serve as Chair for the Employee Wellness Advisory Committee.
• Perform other duties incidental to the work described.

Requirements

• Master's Degree in counseling or related field.
• Must be licensed as a psychologist, counselor, or social worker.
• Eligible to obtain licensure in the State of New York at the time of hire.
• Demonstrated leadership and significant clinical experience are required.
• Cultural competency, a collaborative leadership style, and unwavering commitment to upholding professional ethical standards.
• Ability to design and lead educational programs and community outreach are essential.
• Knowledge of computer/word processing skills.
• Embrace a team approach.
• Demonstrate a commitment to working with a student population.
• Experience in crisis intervention, individual and group counseling, peer education, outreach programs, and/or alcohol and substance abuse issues is preferred.
• Primarily a sedentary office role requiring prolonged periods of sitting and computer use.
• Ability to sit and stand in meetings for extended periods.
• Frequent use of a keyboard, mouse, telephone, and other standard office equipment.
• Sufficient visual activity to review information on a computer screen and in printed materials.
• Hearing and vision within normal ranges is essential.
• Ability to communicate effectively in person, by telephone, and via electronic communication.
• Occasional standing, sitting, walking, bending, or reaching within the office.
• May occasionally lift or move office materials weighing up to 25 pounds.
• Repetition of the same mental and physical tasks.
