About the Role
New York Common Pantry (NYCP) is seeking a Part-Time Food Rescue Driver to coordinate and conduct pick-ups of donated food and other items for their food pantry and hot meal programs. This role also involves providing transportation for special events, participating in food drives, and supporting pantry operations.
Responsibilities
- Pick up prepared food, fresh produce, and other grocery items from corporate partners, schools, and religious organizations.
- Receive and carry out daily and ongoing pick-up and drop-off driving assignments using agency smartphones or tablets.
- Conduct weekly pick-up of donations from partners using a box truck or similar company vehicle.
- Use hand trucks, pallet pump jacks, electric pallet jacks and other light machinery for loading and unloading.
- Provide proactive communication to donors regarding pick-up dates and times.
- Provide professional customer service and donor management to ensure repeated donations.
- Properly weigh, date, and transport all food donations according to NYC food handling standards.
- Unload and appropriately store all food donation items within NY Common Pantry food storage areas.
- Maintain a temperature log for ready-to-eat food during transport.
- Complete donation tracking forms with accurate weight, date, item description, and donor information.
- Log and submit donation tracking information to the Food Procurement Coordinator and enter it into electronic donor systems.
- Ensure donated food is in an acceptable condition for re-use.
- Maintain relationships with food donors and promote NY Common Pantry.
- Guide volunteers assisting with deliveries and storage.
- Assist with pantry programs, including packing food bags, managing inventory, and supporting daily operations.
- Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Requirements
- A High School Diploma or its equivalent.
- A valid license and a clean driving record.
- Experience driving a box truck and Sprinter 3500, or similarly extended cargo van.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Experience using hand trucks and electric pallet jacks.
- Commitment to helping communities in need and NYCP’s work and mission.
- Experience using a forklift.
- Availability to work evenings and weekends as needed.
- Ability to meet deadlines in a timely manner despite traffic or route changes.
- Ability to solve problems that may arise on the job.
- Certification in Food Safety by the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
- Comfortable working with diverse populations.
- Strong multitasking skills and ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced, high-traffic environment.
- Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to travel between multiple job locations.
