About the Role

The Relationship Director (RD) leads complex and high-value SME borrower relationships, focusing on sponsor-backed leveraged and acquisition finance. This role requires significant autonomy, mature credit judgment, strong relationship leadership, and the ability to structure and execute sophisticated transactions. The RD also plays a critical leadership role within the team, coaching junior colleagues, shaping best practice, and deputizing for the Head of Relationship Services.

Responsibilities

  • Own, lead and strategically manage a portfolio of high-value, complex borrowers, focusing on sponsor-backed leveraged/acquisition finance.
  • Maintain regular, senior-level communication with borrowers, sponsors, advisers and management teams.
  • Oversee the onboarding process for new clients and ensure smooth handover of deteriorating credits.
  • Take full accountability for portfolio compliance, including MI receipt, covenant testing, reporting accuracy, escalation and early identification of risks.
  • Monitor acquisition facilities, including reviewing pipeline acquisitions, assessing covenant headroom, and approving/declining draw requests.
  • Review management information, interrogate financial performance, and update senior stakeholders.
  • Lead all borrower in-life events, including forbearance, restructures, covenant resets, new money requests and negotiations.
  • Structure transactions, draft term sheets, prepare credit papers and present recommendations to Credit Forum/Investment Committee.
  • Lead Annual Reviews end-to-end, ensuring timely and accurate analysis and approval.
  • Lead negotiations and documentation processes for new lending and amendments, coordinating with internal legal, external counsel and credit colleagues.
  • Ensure execution is timely, commercially sound, risk-aligned and operationally smooth.
  • Line manage Associate Directors and Portfolio Managers, including allocating work, developing capability and providing feedback.
  • Act as a senior escalation point, providing guidance on complex cases and supporting junior colleagues’ development.
  • Deputise for the Head of Relationship Services as required.
  • Lead project work that supports the team’s wider strategic goals.
  • Adopt a strategic, forward-looking approach to portfolio optimisation, identifying opportunities for new lending, fee generation and value enhancement.
  • Operate with significant autonomy, requiring limited oversight, while keeping senior stakeholders informed where appropriate.

Requirements

  • Significant experience in sponsor-backed leveraged finance, with proven track record originating or managing acquisition finance structures.
  • Direct experience negotiating and executing LMA-style facility agreements, security and intercreditor documents, and committed acquisition facilities.
  • Demonstrable experience managing complex borrower relationships and leading new lending transactions.
  • Strong financial modelling capability, including leveraged case modelling, covenant analysis and scenario testing.
  • Strong understanding of the commercial lending landscape (pricing, competitors, structures).
  • Ability to work independently with senior-level autonomy while collaborating effectively with key stakeholders.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills; confident engaging with senior management teams, sponsors and advisers.
  • Strong organisation and project management, with ability to manage multiple complex workstreams.
  • Proactive, solutions-focused, results-driven attitude.
  • Constructive challenge mindset; willing to question assumptions and drive better outcomes.
  • Strategic thinker with balanced judgement across risk, value and client outcomes.
  • Strong leadership capability, coaching and developing junior talent.
