About the Role

The Environmental Hazards Specialist plays a critical role in the EH&S Department, overseeing NYCHA's staff and vendors to ensure adherence to regulations governing the verification, remediation, and abatement of pollutants affecting NYCHA’s environment. This includes pollutants such as mold, asbestos, lead, pests, general air quality, and water quality (legionella, potable water, stormwater, and sewage water).

Responsibilities

Conduct field oversight of NYCHA and vendor(s) personnel conducting inspection, remediation, and abatement of environmental hazards to evaluate efficacy and compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
Prepare detailed reports outlining field oversight findings, highlighting compliance with regulations and best practices, and flagging potential health hazard risks.
Liaise with NYCHA staff and business unit leadership for in-depth oversight through document reviews and interviews.
Respond to and investigate environmental hazard complaints and assist in developing management plans.
Conduct walk-through inspections to identify indicators of environmental hazards.
Conduct training for NYCHA staff and vendors on environmental hazards.
Conduct desk monitoring and review of regulatory filings for environmental hazards activities to evaluate compliance with policy and performance standards.
Collaborate with business units to recommend process improvements for resident and employee safety.

Requirements

A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college, including or supplemented by 30 semester credits in physical and/or biological sciences (e.g., biology, botany, chemistry, geology, physics, physiology, zoology), with no more than 12 credit hours in applied sciences (e.g., environmental technology, sanitation technology, medical technology, public health, infection control, food service); and at least two years of satisfactory full-time experience performing inspections to assure compliance with pertinent laws, rules, and regulations governing food, drugs, and general environmental conditions.
An associate degree from an accredited college, with 15 semester credits in physical and/or biological sciences (with no more than 6 credit hours in applied sciences), and 4 years of satisfactory full-time experience as described above.
Education and/or experience equivalent to the above, with at least 60 semester credits from an accredited college, including at least 15 semester credits in physical and/or biological sciences.
At least 2 years of experience as a public health sanitarian.
Candidates who did not take and pass the civil service exam for Associate Public Health Sanitarian administered on 05/20/26 may not be considered.
NYCHA employees applying for promotional, title or level change opportunities must have served a period of one year at current location and in current title and level (if applicable).
