About the Role

The Department of Transportation's mission is to ensure the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods in New York City. The Sidewalk Program specifically focuses on making sidewalks safe and accessible for all pedestrians. This role will assist the Sidewalk Program in overseeing pedestrian ramp upgrade and new installation contracts.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Department of Transportation (DOT) Sidewalk Program oversee the pedestrian ramp upgrade and new installation contracts managed by the Department of Design and Construction (DDC).
  • Supervise engineering staff.
  • Create engineer related reports for upper management.
  • Assess the constructability of corners to determine if pedestrian ramps can be installed with the upgrade and new installation contracts.
  • Assess if temporary asphalt ramps can be installed until a permanent solution is available.
  • Audit tasks performed by the Assistant Civil Engineers and Civil Engineer Interns.
  • Perform mark-outs for high priority and complex locations.
  • Work closely with consultant engineers and inspectors to resolve daily issues and questions from DDC.
  • Attend progress meetings to address issues that are not resolved.
  • Review designs, plans, and contract specifications/scopes.

Requirements

  • Must be serving permanently in the title, or be reachable on civil service list, exam # 4522.
  • Four (4) years of full-time, satisfactory experience in civil engineering work.
  • A valid New York State Professional Engineer’s License.
  • Current New York State registration as a Professional Engineer must be maintained for the duration of your employment.
  • A masters degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university may be substituted for one year of the civil engineering experience.
  • Must have at least one year within the last three years of experience as a major contributor or a project leader on a complex project requiring additional and specific expertise in the disciplines needed to design or construct the project for Assignment Levels II and III.
