About the Role

Traffic Device Maintainers (TDMs) will install, maintain, and repair traffic control devices, including signs, bus stops, and pavement markings. This role supports initiatives to improve bus speed, reliability, accessibility, and the rider experience throughout New York City.

Responsibilities

• Install, maintain, and repair traffic control devices such as traffic signs on streets and highways.
• Install, maintain, and repair stanchions and supports.
• Install, maintain, and repair citywide bus stops.
• Install, maintain, and repair informational and regulatory signs.
• Install, maintain, and repair pavement markings.
• Operate, maintain, and make minor adjustments to motor vehicles.
• Operate, maintain, and make minor adjustments to pavement marking machines.
• Operate, maintain, and make minor adjustments to air compressors.
• Operate, maintain, and make minor adjustments to pavement breakers.
• Operate, maintain, and make minor adjustments to snowplows.
• Operate, maintain, and make minor adjustments to other field and shop equipment.
• Perform manual labor in the loading and unloading of trucks.
• Perform manual labor in the placement of traffic devices and rigs.
• Climb and work from ladders, tower trucks, and bucket trucks.
• Remove traffic encumbrances.
• Perform other related duties.
• Ensure compliance with all agency safety rules and regulations.
• Ensure all safety equipment and gear are used and worn properly on work sites.

Requirements

• Two years of full-time satisfactory experience using hand and/or power tools to assemble, repair, maintain and/or install mechanical and/or electrical devices.
• A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and one year of full-time satisfactory experience as described above.
• Graduation from an approved four-year trade, technical or vocational high school with a mechanical or electrical major.
• At least one year of full-time satisfactory experience using hand and/or power tools to assemble, repair, maintain and/or install mechanical and/or electrical devices, plus sufficient training in the mechanical or electrical field acquired in an approved trade, technical or vocational high school to make up the equivalent of the remaining required experience (six months of acceptable experience will be credited for each year of such training).
• Possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) with no restrictions, or a Class B Learner’s Permit at the time of appointment.
• Maintain a Class B Commercial Driver License with no restrictions for the duration of employment.
• Pass a pre-employment drug screening.
• Be subject to random drug testing.
• Meet medical guidelines for the position.
• New hires must reside in NYC for the first two years of employment.
