About the Role
Lead the team responsible for customer and platform safety, including transaction monitoring, sanctions and payment screening, client information requests, and suspicious activity report preparation. This role emphasizes treating control and customer experience as interconnected, aiming to build a team that meets service levels, maintains high quality, reduces false positives, and leverages automation and AI for growth without compromising standards.
Responsibilities
- Lead the monitoring and screening operation with clear standards for investigation, disposal, and escalation.
- Ensure queues are current by making case and alert ageing visible and addressing backlogs proactively.
- Operate screening as a real-time control on payments and customers with clear first-line procedures and timely senior sign-off.
- Develop an information-request (RFI) function that is precise, proportionate, and accurate, collaborating with customer-facing teams for clarity.
- Ensure the quality of evidence and narratives for the MLRO for complete and effective suspicious activity reports.
- Collaborate with data and analytics colleagues to continuously tune detection rules and thresholds, reducing false positives and documenting rationale.
- Implement automation and AI for routine tasks under strong quality assurance, focusing experienced personnel on complex cases.
- Provide clear management information on service levels, quality, effectiveness, and cost to governance.
- Build and lead a high-performing team through effective hiring, coaching, and performance management.
Requirements
- Proven track record leading transaction monitoring, sanctions/payment screening, or financial-crime operations at scale in payments, fintech, or financial services, supported by demonstrable results.
- Drive to maintain a current and high-quality operation, owning problems end-to-end and identifying root causes.
- Strong operational discipline, including meeting service levels, documenting threshold tuning, maintaining effective controls, and ensuring a clean audit trail.
- Customer mindset applied to controls, handling information requests and account restrictions clearly, proportionately, and with care.
- Practical experience introducing automation or AI into operations, with a clear understanding of the roles of machines and human judgment.
- Solid understanding of the boundary between first-line operations and the MLRO/second-line decision-making process.
- Track record of hiring, developing, and leading high-performing teams, managing performance fairly and decisively.
