About the Role

This role supports communications strategies for cross-department media relations, experiential communications, and new media/emerging storytelling platforms. The position involves travel up to 10% of the year.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a media relations expert, providing strategic counsel and identifying opportunities to elevate league storytelling.
  • Manage proactive and reactive media outreach for key announcements, events, and business initiatives.
  • Cultivate and strengthen relationships with key media contacts across various outlets.
  • Identify emerging trends and recommend proactive PR opportunities for thought leadership.
  • Support the transformation of the PR group’s digital newsroom for a digital-first approach.
  • Collaborate with internal teams to develop multimedia elements for PR outputs.
  • Manage business communications announcements across @NBAPR on X and lead digital narrative amplification.
  • Build and execute PR strategies engaging non-traditional outlets and emerging platforms.
  • Develop, maintain, and catalogue media relations materials.
  • Manage PR plans, deliverables, and cross-functional coordination for tentpole events.
  • Leverage AI-enabled tools for media targeting, campaign planning, content development, and performance analysis.
  • Track and analyze PR campaign performance, creating media coverage reports with AI-assisted analytics.
  • Serve as the communications lead for experiential PR opportunities.
  • Identify, develop, and champion new experiential storytelling opportunities and fan-facing activations.
  • Develop media engagement plans for experiential storytelling moments.
  • Coordinate cross-functional planning with Events, Marketing, Social, and Digital Content teams.
  • Measure the impact of experiential initiatives through earned and social media coverage, reach, and sentiment analysis.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of agency, in-house communications, or journalism experience.
  • BA/BS required.
  • Proven track record of proactive media relations success.
  • Strong written communication skills for executive-level messaging.
  • Experience developing multimedia assets for PR use.
  • Highly collaborative mindset with ability to influence across departments.
  • Experience navigating and evaluating generative AI tools and AI search features.
  • Understanding of how AI systems interpret and rank information.
  • Excellent project management skills with ability to balance multiple priorities.
  • Deep understanding of evolving media landscapes.
  • High attention to detail, strong organizational capabilities, and a solutions-oriented approach.
  • Ability to identify issues and propose sound solutions.
  • Ability to draft standalone deliverables that meet supervisor's standards.
